We've seen this to be true since Q4 of 2022. RIFs exposed the power that employers still wield, and the macroeconomic climate is not yielding power back to the consumer/worker anytime soon.

It's time! Workers doing the bare minimum (because they could) have undoubtedly affected our economy. Time to grow up!

Yup...when credit is loose, times are easy, people slack off and the economy falters. Time to get to work.

It's almost as if the Pandemic had an effect...or stranglehold...on many global core import/export commodities and industries. The lag created massive whiplash.

So many industries are still trying to catch up. An example of this was the purchase of my new vehicle yesterday. This Mercedes Benz dealership was excited to have (only) six new vehicles this year (I just bought one and it arrived that day) while they would normally have well over 100. Inventory is at an all time low. I’m not sure how these sales people are able to make a living. Very sad!

Yup. There are still major supply chain issues to work through, especially as both China and the US are looking to onshore manufacturing in this escalating great power conflict.

I'm expecting more pain.

Yeah I think this escalating trade war with China is only going to worsen the issue sadly.

Agreed. Pendulum has swung back. There are still tons of jobs open, and a severe shortage of workers, so I don't imagine it will regress further.

It will probably mostly be felt in white collar work.

If I had to sum it up, this article points out that employers are once again in the driver’s seat due to the need to “cut heads”. Some employers are demanding that their employees return to the office, etc. This is a major shift; during the pandemic employers were taking desperate measures to attract and retain talent. Bottom line, unless you (as an employee) are bringing ROI to your employer, you are now at risk of having your head on the chopping block.

Unfortunately, that definitely seems to be the case.

There was a lot of overreach in some of the demands some workers were making, too. Great time to get a job, though.

Absolutely! I hate to say it, but I am glad that employers aren't getting railroaded any longer. If you're going to work for a company you should be EARNING your paycheck-- and not complaining!

There’s definitely give and take. Employers have a right to expect employees to do their jobs. Employees have the right to not be abused by their employer.

I agree with you. There have been and always will be abusive employers. Life’s too short to live like that. The good news is we will always have options.

That's why you've gotta side hustle. The only way to have power over employers is to stop relying on them for money.

So long as you aren't taking on work that is done during office hours and not in direct conflict with your day job. You could get yourself fired. No bueno.

What are office hours?

But no, I'm only partially joking. I work remotely at an international company so my office hours are all the hours. I just make sure I'm clocking full-time hours and think of my full-time job as my number one priority, but they're flexible.

And obviously never help a competitor of any kind. That's the biggest thing.

As someone who manages a team this is a wild time. Rookie-of-the-day who overextended themselves and secured higher than rationale salaries have a target, and it’s sucks for everyone involved. I stayed my hand, and I was really worried for a long time I did the wrong thing. Now I don’t have to fire anyone or have those hard talks. It feels very weird, professionally, right now.

Tl;Dr Due to economic slowdowns, companies are cutting jobs and no longer offering perks and benefits that they had during the pandemic. Job searches like "quiet quitting" and "bare minimum mondays" have decreased by 90%. Companies are also using surveillance software to check if employees are working from home. Business owners are reminding workers that their job performance matters and that they need to provide a good return on investment for their employers.
