To Andrew the CEO…

I got a cold call from "Andrew the CEO" who didn't tell me his company's name (probably for the best).  He said "I'm cold calling you". Ok I thought. And I listened.

He addressed me by name and said he had a great new prospecting tool for my SDRs and BDRs. I told him we don't have any of those. He was shocked and said "but you're in sales, right?"

I then asked him what he knew anything about my company <X>. He came clean and said "dude you got me".

I feel only slightly bad for telling his it was the worst cold call I'd ever received and then hung up.

Am I wrong for expecting someone who calls me to at least know what my company does? And also to not make assumptions about me just because I'm in sales?

Not wrong for expecting that work to be done. Probably unrealistic as Andrew is probably making 100's of calls a day and just slinging shit into the wind, but still fair to expect better on your end.

He is not Andrew the CEO. He is Andrew, that's all.
I'm assuming you'd know basics before cold calling - and if you couldn't find out more information, you ask before you pitch.
of course you would expect the basic hygiene.

And then he ran to his sales manager and social media proclaiming that cold calling is dead!

Yes that's my point. Bad cold callers think cold calling is dead.

You let him off easy.
Was just having this conversation with a peer yesterday. Reps of all levels seem to be just going through the motions and checking the boxes.

I forget the person but this guy who was an executive used to say that he would ask 2 questions when cold called, who they were and they did, if you just read a blurb from their about us section then chances were he was hanging up.
