Vacation Request = BS schpiel about future growth with company

Vacation. Took 2 days this year. Request made for this Friday and the Dec 20th week plus 2 days the following week.

Denied. Manager said we need to discuss it.

I said, what did you want to talk about, played it off, I mentioned casually I am going to see my family, instantly got hit with an almost 20 minute monologue about what do I want to do in the company in terms of growth, am I serious about it, blah, blah, blah, you inquired about open opportunities earlier this year ( after which my manager gave a speech about expecting loyalty to both himself and the company).

I had to mute the damned phone because I was miserable. Miserably bored out of my mind as I casually heard the bs coming out of this dudes mouth.

Long story short. Just another fine example of the pure scum-baggery that affects us sales people when dealing with management.

I have been advised to try and compromise. My compromise will be coming in the terms of a great offer, giving notice, and maybe the finger. Probably even taking the time off and just not making it official.

What do you think?

Throw the two finger salute to them and hope they have a happy holidays with 1 less employee. Vacation requests arenโ€™t asking permission, they are you telling them you wonโ€™t be there.

Take the time off, donโ€™t make it official, get paid out for the vacay when you leave.. and leave. Itโ€™a got a fucking bow on it.

I've been leading teams for 10+ years and I have never once denied someone's time off request (assuming they still had time off available).ย  ย I've made recommendations on the most optimal times to plan vacations based on the seasonality of our business - but never once told someone they couldn't take time.ย

Well at least your compromise is a great one ๐Ÿ˜…

just find a good company with a good manager and youโ€™ll be fine

Love the compromise!

Being denied time off at a time of year where its common to spend time with your family is ridiculous. In fact, it's been proven people are now working more than ever because there's no boundaries or 'commute' when WFH. With that in mind, I'd probably reference this in conversation.

Definitely would have my bets hedged with interviews and/or an offer elsewhere

This is a whole load of bullshit, and I think your planned strategy is the best route.

How much business that isn't ALREADY set up actually happens just before/after Christmas? NONE

Fuck this guy

At my last company we had to "earn" our PTO. Not sure how common this is but basically, we got so many hours of PTO per pay period.

We were still expected to get permission to take time off though which I thought was stupid. I was denied PTO several times when I decided I was going to stop asking because if I had to earn it I should be able to use it whenever I wanted.

I only caught hell once when I just told my manager that if I had to earn this shit I wasn't about to ask his permission to use it just like I don't ask him if I can spend my own money.

From that point on all they asked for was 24 hours notice.

Thats awesome. I feel awful about these companies that don't care a shit about mental health and talk about career trajectory.

All the best and hope you compromise soon!

Leave. Can't imagine working for someone like that. I've had a few bad managers that weren't even this ridiculous

Time to get out of there.ย  "loyalty to the company" is a joke these days, when none of them have any loyalty to you.ย  ย And WTF does that manager mean about loyalty to him?ย  ย Why would you have that, when he clearly does not care?

I am just going to respond to the email and do the following...ย  ย

Following through on this.ย
Planning for the week of the 20th and the Tuesday of the next week to be with family. If I get a call for a deal or a lead, I will know. If buyers are serious, they will move quickly.ย

I would definitely be looking to compromise, as you put it. Go find somewhere you won't be treated this way.ย

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldnโ€™t be in for very long. Theyโ€™re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now Iโ€™m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldnโ€™t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.

First day at an analytics start up coming over from a 5k+ employee dinosaur. What should I be on the look out for in terms of different culture, expectations, drama, etc?

When you have your LinkedIn account set to "open to work" and recruiters reach out all the time do you take the mindset of "I need to sell myself for this role" OR "The recruiter needs to sell the role to myself?"
