What's the next move?

I just got news that the SMB/MM segment of business I operate in is being dissolved in the new FY. The GTM team is evaluating the sales capacities for the Enterprise and Strategic segments over the coming weeks. And my boss highlighted he thinks I'll have a shot at joining the Ent. team given the praise the MM leaders have already given.

The business has been steadily growing over the last decade, but the last year was brutal and the internal thoughts are that they grew the SMB/MM too fast to accommodate the demand in the market for our solution and need to roll up a lot of MM accounts back into Enterprise and simplify the sales motion.

As mentioned, I've built a strong brand for myself over several years of Sales Development, and now closing my business. My boss is confident I'm one of very few who would have a chance to move into the Enterprise segment and stay with the company. For context, I'm one of a few that has a path to quota, and I'm the second top NN logo rep attainment.

I know I need to hedge my bets and look externally for a role while positioning myself as worthy of retaining but it's open a lot of questions naturally, Do I want to stay here? Do I want to take a gamble on the next manager being a good one? Should I take my sales skills to a new product/industry? Ultimately I would choose to stay, and take on the next growth opportunity for my career, and in an ideal situation, I would still get to work with my manager and biggest mentor.

Any insight or personal experiences would be appreciated as I use this time to evaluate the next big thing for my career.

I think you nailed this quandary in your opening statement. Please allow me to translate: I really want this next opportunity, but Iโ€™m scared to death of net getting it.

โ€ฆ and that just makes you human. Youโ€™ve answered your own question here. You need to ferociously pursue the new role. You also need to insure your future by not going without a check. Youโ€™ve got to do both.

Wishing you the path of no resistance โœŠ

I've been in this vise more times than I'd care to even admit. One thing I can promise you. It will be behind you at some point soon. Best I can tell, I've gotten through 100% of these. You will too.

Thank you! I think you're right in your analysis. I do want to stick around but all the change and unknowns have me worried about it being the right path. It's also surreal to be told, "Hey, everyone is getting canned, but you likely have a shot at a promotion and to join a territory."

Pursue this internal opportunity as if it's a new job. Position yourself in the best light, and connect with your current manager as well as existing Enterprise reps about the role and expectations. Stay positive and continue to stay in contact with leadership and your manager to give yourself the best possible outcome.
It also is a good time to start looking externally as well, because all those questions you're posing are aspirational until you have tangible offers on the table. How do you know if you want to go somewhere else if you don't have an offer to compare?

I appreciate this advice, the "staying positive" and needing to truly evaluate external options is sound advice as I consider what's best for me.

Exactly! It doesnโ€™t sound to me as though youโ€™re in a bad spot, but youโ€™re in the best place to make that determination. Good for you for doing all the right things to put yourself in a good position. Long term, this pays off.

I think I want to be here for it, but it kills me to think all of my peers are being forced out the door, and I'd be one of the few left.

Some of these questions you have to figure out on your own. Change is scary, Iโ€™ve been there. And sometimes itโ€™s about the devil you know, vs the one you donโ€™t as well. What I would say is, do your research and be diligent about it. Look elsewhere to hedge your bets, reach out to old contacts and grab a coffee. See whatโ€™s out there.

Good luck.

Human-ness is so important these days and we all struggle with these kind of questions. Staying within the same company if possible and growing with them is always a good way to go esp. if you like it there.

Either way youโ€™re winning! Your track record proves it and youโ€™ll figure it out bc youโ€™ve proven to do that as well! If it doesnโ€™t pan out with this company there are plenty talent-starved companies that will see that also. Take the chance where youโ€™ll grow while getting paid more
