When a new company that just hired you performs a background check on previous job roles, do they know if you got fired? Or the extent of it? Or they just check to make sure you worked the dates you say you worked?

Generally they won’t check into “why” you left, just the dates you worked there. If they ask why, you can say that it was a mutual parting of ways.

And always keep the dates you were at somewhere as vague and general as possible - month/year for anything less than 5 years and then just Years for >5 years back.

Generally just dates and eligibility for rehire. Giving info beyond that is a concern for HR depts opening the company to liability.

Legally they are not allowed to give the reason for departure. Also if you give them HR for verification after the 2nd-3rd time they try to get in touch and HR doesn't answer they give up and just mark it as unverified. You could also provide a W2 blacked out to show proof that you worked there. Lots of ways around this and not worth sweating over

They just know your title and dates of employment. If there is more, it means you or your previous employer volunteered it. Most likely they wouldn’t as it would open them up to litigation.

Typically termination terms are internal affairs.
Usually they won’t call up your old boss anymore, I find I get asked for referrals these days who get hit with an email asking a several questions and an optional phone call that can be declined.

The worst case scenario is the “would you hire them again?” Question to which, if you were term’d, they will obviously respond with “no.”

But, like I said, rarely are they going to call up your old bosses and do all this crazy cross referencing and such.

If you lie about the company you worked for that’s a different story, because background check saas solutions can confirm that kind of jazz. What they cannot do however is find out “why you were let go” because, as above, they are internal affairs for the most part.

Referrals, like everything else, have started to move online. Some companies won’t hire until referrals do the task. Nobody will know you were fired.

Just the dates I believe, for those who seeks the firing situation they're just trying to make sure that it was for whichever reason except being for an action sanctioned by law I suppose!

Most companies are going to play it safe. They'll typically say the dates and possibly if they are eligible for re-hire. That's it.

Don't go into a new position hiding or misleading.... that rarely ends well.

As someone who works for a background screening company, there’s a lot of good answers above.

Legally, your new employer cannot ask that, only eligibility for re-hire. If you want to know more specifics, shoot me a message.

Great Question, my friend was asking his boss about this like a month ago but no help from him either

It is against the law for your previous employer to give anything but dates of employment and job title. So you can tell anyone you speak to that you simply left the company.

I used to work for a large background screening company. 9/10 times they are just checking to make sure you worked there around the time you said you worked there.

Hopefully you are never taking a job where they aren't ready to onboard you and move forward.

If they are still technically going through hiring checks, I think it's maybe better to not have started before that.

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.

Has massive growth ever led to mental breakdown? I have been hustling since 17 years old chasing to strive for success doing odd jobs and unintentionally ended up with Edtech K12 Sales as my first official sales job - A toxic culture with no employee respect eventually me to switch after 18 months. Since reps in Edtech are highly valued, had no option but to continue in Edtech sales. This time it was higher education segment, things looked good in the first few month but slowly it started adapting methodologies like the old Edtech since the management was changed. I decided to move out and switch to B2B SaaS. After 13 months of learning & success, my aspirations weren’t matching with the growth vision shared by my manager and ended up being desperate to switch. Got to a AM-Inside Sales role with a 50% hike. Guess what? It led to my mental break down since the culture is pathetic. In entire journey, all challenges never affected my performance but l am losing the spark to glow and hustle eventually. While I plan to switch, a token of guilt is still alive. The experiences have made me far better and strong as a BDR but blank about the next steps in my career. Thanks for reading. Do share your thoughts.
