When your interviewer is not prepared

So normally, I interview with someone along the lines of Sales Manager or VP+ title, and they start off with, I have not had a chance to review your resume.

This always seems to be a bad sign. The meeting was on their calendar for a few days, they know they are going to interview someone, but they don't show up prepared.

I'm thinking that normally, it indicates they aren't taking you seriously. even if it's the 2nd or the 5th interview.

What would be the best way to counteract this?

Saying, no worries, I've got a lot of questions prepared and offer to share an agenda. Ask them what they are looking for when it comes to filling this role? Something else?

The best way is to give them a concise summary of your experience that aligns with the qualities they look for in a candidate

Its annoying, but if you call them out, they will just be defensive

Sounds good. So just start the conversation by telling them about yourself, get them talking, and keep the conversation going basically??

Yeah as much as you want to tell them they’re idiots you still have an interview to do

I can't say much, I barely prepare for half of my calls but I appreciate the feeling of frustration that could cause when you are actually interested in the position.

I don't think VP's should be reading resumes, but the hiring manager that's a massive red flag, it's part of their job.

First, it gives you some pretty good insight into their culture... and I might hold that in my pocket for closing negotiations...

It happens - I'd ask them what it is they would like to know and take it from there. Be prepared to summarize relevant experience. All the things you most likely know to do to prep.

Just be ready with your 30 second elevator speech after giving them a couple mins to review the resume. Not much you can do about it. Engage the person with questions like "how would you and I interact if I came on board", etc. Get them talking about you being in the job already and not focus on them being unprepared for the interview.

"Did you review the resumes of any of the other candidates?"

If so, what did you like and dislike about them?
Hey, if they haven't read my resume, then this indicates what is good to mention or avoid on my own resume. NEVER lie, the interviewer may have read your resume and be putting you to the test.
