Work from home doesn't mean work 24/7 - Do you agree ?

Lately, SDRs have been requested by some managers to "be available when needed - you work from home it shouldn't be a problem".

Since I did not get the memo and apparently I'm new to this kind of exquisite behavior - Curious to get your thoughts on this. Advice is more than welcome.

Fuck that. Working hours stay the same regardless of location unless you choose to work outside those hours on your own accord.ย

100% - I think as long as the result comes into the timeliness, you can handle your time accordinglyย

I work 24/7.

24 minutes per hour, 7 hours per day.

GTFO. What kind of bullshit train is that lol.. not even sure what you'd need a bdr for outside of 9-5

If I was told that, I'd be right outta there!

Dangerous. Boundaries need to be set.ย

If your boss wants to be available or "on call" 24/7 then good for them! That doesn't mean you have to be, unless it was written in your job description or contract.ย

I hate them in principle, but this is when a company handbook comes in handy. The last place I worked had a strict "brokers hours" rule where you had to be available 8am-6pm EST M-F. As a member of management that didn't really apply to me, nor should it sometimes, but I made sure to treat my BDR team accordingly.

I think it depends on the roll and the pay structure, 100% commission you work when you want but that usually means you work when your clients do.... salaried typically this comes with time constraints

absolutely - what kinda grinds my gear is when the structure is not clear enough to allow that line

If a prospect wants a meeting outside normal work hours sure because it will generate me commission, but outside that no chance. Luckily, never had any issue with that at my company.

Sounds like you work for a company that's gonna abuse you for as long as you work for them. Work/life balance is real and you get to clock out when you're done.ย

Btw, if you quit this job this is a perfect explanation for why you left. No self-respecting company would question why you quit in this situation to look for something better.

Work from home is definitely somewhat 24/7 but not necessarily. In my experience it means more than anything that you are on call. However I never mind answering client's questions or late order because that just means I am filling in more orders. We each seek different work life balance. If I can play XBox and be considered a great sales manager why not do both. Just please don't call me after 6!!

One of the biggest adjustments I had to make when I began working remotely many years ago was to learn that I didn't HAVE to be available all the time.ย  ย It was a choice I could make to run my business (my territory) how I saw fit.ย  If I was in the middle of a key sale or I had a big presentation to prep, I'd work longer.ย  Other quieter days, I might take some down time (oh, who am I kidding, what's "down time" in sales).ย  ย ย
TBH, the biggest adjustment was for my family:ย  just because I'm here when I'm not on the road does not mean that I'll be doing laundry or vacuuming the living room.ย  I'm working a job for which I get paid, just without the commute.
That said, expecting your BDR/SDR to "be available" around the clock...no.ย  Just no.ย  ย I can't imagine a scenario where that is in any way reasonable.

I agree with that.ย  I also think that "please be available during working hours" is reasonable as well.ย  ย Just 24/7 - isn't that reserved for trauma surgeons on call and the POTUS?ย  ย It seems overkill for BDR.

Why would they? An SDRs job is to make calls. Who are you going to call and expect to pick up after business hours? Your manager sounds like he's trying to justify his job by just making memos and not actually doing any work.ย

I think this just shows how important it is to stand your ground in a WFH role. Set your schedule on your calendar and stick to it. If you don't have an employer that can respect that, find a new employer lol.

Just cause we work from home doesn't mean we're always available. The job setting changed from office to home, yet the working hours required by someone shouldn't. People need to live their lives outside of work even in WFH to stay sharp and excited about work.

Had a former manager expect me to clock in early and stay late to show grit and determination.ย

He'd always be the first one to check out himself though.ย
