Working 2 Jobs

This came up a recent happy hour since it was suspected a colleague wasn't working their current patch at all and just coasting.  How could a current tech employer find out if their employee works at another company in a completely different sector ?  Could the company sue ?

This has been discussed a few times here - some interesting comments. You might want to hit the search bar and check them out.

Bottom line, read your contract.

But in short: employers have the right to expect you to be conducting business on their behalf during general working hours.

It's all about the contract. The 'in short' is what it really comes down to - even if it's not banned in writing, you need to be working/available during those work hours.

If you’re using your company issued computer to do work for another company you’re 1) dumb and 2) subject to easy discovery

Only do work for a second role off of your regular work hours.

The company has the right to “take action” as deemed fit and as per the contract.

Numerous ways to find that out, companies don’t usually act on it until suspicious.

Always be extra cautious, in every aspect.

Companies didn’t become “companies” by being fooled by employees who’re just coasting.

Legally there is nothing wrong with working two jobs. How many people have a day job + and eBay store ( or similar).

That said, Sales is very much a 8-5 gig. Very hard to serve two masters who both want the same schedule from you.

You definitely will run into issues if the two companies are competitive or overlap in ANY way.

Regarding your coworker… I would stay away from that. Lots of reasons could exist for the perceived coasting, none of which benefit you.

Never understood the beef with someone working a 2nd job if they’re getting their job done at the 1st. But to answer your question - all depends what the contract says
