Worth trying a recruiter?

I am currently looking hard for a new job and was curious if anyone else has had good luck with using a recruiter, and if so what is the best way to get in touch with a reliable one?

Thanks!

100%, you have nothing to lose. You get someone advocating for you at no cost.

Look for recruiters who specialize in your area of expertise and with your ideal company type. You will find lots of sales recruiting firms that specialize in early stage startups or larger enterprise sales orgs for example.

Call all of them, talk to them about what you're looking for. Ask if they know of any roles or tips for you.

You can do the exact same thing with most VC's and PE's. They typically have a careers page on their site showing all openings at their portfolio companies. Similarly, they often specialize in a certain type of company so reach out to the ones that align with your ideal company/role.

Never tried paying for one

When I'm not looking I just try and network them for the future or if they send me a message on InMail then to connect with them. Or message anyone in your network of recruiters that you're available for X and X.

Best of luck with your job search!

a recruiter has asked you to pay? their bonus is typically a % of your salary once you make it at a job they place you in for 90 days. recruiters asking for a "retainer" or for the candidate to pay would be wild.

I've not had any luck using them. But I think that's because my experience doesn't match up with what most recruiters are able to place. The sweet spot seems to be candidates with 3-5 years of SaaS-specific AE experience, and then 7-10 for more advanced roles. If you have less experience, or your experience is a mix of SaaS and non-SaaS, it's tougher for them to place you, so they really don't want to waste their time talking to you. Nothing personal, they have a number just like we do.

Going through a recruiter is fine - as long as you don't pay for one. And most are paid via the the employer. But as a previous poster pointed out, its tough for recruiters right now.

Without knowing your niche, its hard to point you in any direction since most recruiters specialize in a specific space.

Where are you located? There's a bunch of shops that focus just on tech sales.

i.e. Robert Half, The Lions, CloserIQ --> reach out to an AE equivalent here and you'll be an inbound lead for them.

Not a great idea, as what you'll pay em to do can be actually done by yourself without paying a penny!
Keep Networking and Keep Applying and always maintain a well updated resume that truly reflects the who you are and how you would make adifference once being selected!
Good Luck.

I’ve received several jobs through recruiters, just make sure you are using someone whose services are free to you and that you don’t pay them anything. The way their business model works is that the company hiring for the roles will pay them once they place you, so the incentives are good for everyone involved.

Recruiters are great since they have quite a few connections and can put you right through the interview process as well as find really great positions not publicly listed on job boards

If you’re interested I know a couple tech recruiters that are real solid guys if you would like a LinkedIn intro

Negative. There are a ton of recruiters out there that will take you on if you're an attractive candidate. If you're looking to break into tech... it's a crap shoot.
