You can spank a monkey's ass until it turns red but that doesn't make it a baboon.

I do believe one of if not the largest contributors to high churn rate for sales teams is when a company pretends to be something it's not during the hiring process and onboarding only to turn out to be something completely different when the veil is lifted.

If you're "no nonsense, nose to the grindstone" be up front about it.

If you're still figuring shit out as a company/team say so.

If "after hours" meetings and trainings are common, make that known.

This way the team members you end up with are there because they want to be. In the words of my father, "Don't piss on my boot and tell me it's raining."

Thanks, being from a ranching family I've got a ton of those kind of sayings.

Iโ€™m going to try to use this phrase at least once a day for the rest of my life.

I cannot draw a straight line AT ALL between ranching and that phrase. The background on that saying must be awesome.

Hahaha not much of a connection really. That's just how most ranchers talk. My grandfather especially he had some doosies.

Very good advice here for managers. If you feel the need to mislead anyone about your team/company you should probably find a new one to represent.

100% Couldn't agree more. Obviously if you feel like you need to mislead you're aware that there is a problem. Might as well find somewhere without those issues.

Transparency is key- if people know what they're signing up for they're much more likely to 'stick it out'.ย

I once had a sales manager who would routinely tell people it was "possible" to make six-figures in that role. Sales Manager started a couple months before me in the industry and neither of us had made six-figures to that point but of course when we were recruited it was part of the talk track and he just repeated it.ย

Drove me nuts because the only way it would have been possible would have been to sell 200-300% of annual quota; depending on tenure quota is a sliding scale in that industry, but newbies are closer to the 300% mark to hit six-figs.

TL;DR don't do this with OTE either!ย

I hear you on that. My current company boasted an OTE that had me practically salivating during the interview. Now I find out that in the history of the US sales team 1 person has actually made the "expected" OTE

Ridiculous... I'd prefer to take a job with lower OTE if I knew that number wasn't a made-up fairytale. I'm damn good, but I'm not a miracle worker.ย

This is very well said. There are absolutely people who want the culty work atmosphere. There are people who want to figure out what the contracts should look like. Go find those people instead of tricking others.

Two great metaphors in one. What a time to be alive. As my grandpappy used to say โ€œyou ainโ€™t a man til youโ€™ve had a manโ€.
