Zoom Interview Etiquette

I had a recruiter advise me to join a Zoom 10m prior to my interview's scheduled time. I, personally, feel like this is an outdated way of thinking. I believe it's rude- our scheduled time is our scheduled time and 2-3 mins early should be good.

Would love to hear what you savages think of this!

How early you joining that Zoom interview?

1-3 minutes beforehand and never more than that. Zoom typically notifies someone when a participant joins and I don’t need the interviewer to be bothered by a notification 10 minutes beforehand saying I’m in there

I'm not even currently interviewing- but someone joined my Zoom room 10m early and it spurred this memory. I looked at that notification and was like "HELLL NAW CATHY, calm yourself!"

10 minutes????? thats an inane amount of time in my mind.

10 minutes was cool when you had to sit in a waiting room at an office building.

joining a zoom meeting 10 minutes early is like standing out side someones door and pressing your face against the window.....

2-3 minutes early is totally solid.

I'd say 5 minutes to be safe, and settle yourself in. It can't hurt, doesn't take much out of your day, and could make a difference.

Though I'm a bit old school at times.

3-5mins is fine. Anything more is an annoyance to the host, IMO.

That's the kind of BDE I hope to embody one day. I'm too afraid of technical difficulties to cut it that close- I try to give myself a solid 120 seconds at least.

Absolutely. The clock hits 1:59 and I’m on instantly. I was on before the meeting time, but I’m not shooting the breeze for 10 minutes before everyone else on the call shows.

It's a damn good thing I ended up loving the hiring manager because it was the worst recruiter experience I've ever had... and I've had some interesting ones.

Yeah 10 minutes is stupid. A couple of minutes before is fine. If you want me on 10 minutes earlier, schedule it for 10 minutes earlier.

If I haven't used the conferencing platform in a while, I'll join a little early to make sure there aren't updates (I'm looking at you, WebEx).  If I'm hosting and it's a big meeting, I'm at least 5 minutes early.  If I've been invited, and I'm technically good to go, no earlier than 5 minutes.

I always join 2 min before. 5 max but it is usually 2.

I feel that just sitting there by yourself just builds up unnecessary anxiety.

The recruiter suggested you do that. I’d take that as helpful advice and play the game if you’re interested in learning more about the job. I’ll typically join and just keep my video and audio off until they show up.

That's what I did... I just thought the idea was so stupid. Also totally devaluing MY time. Like, bish, if I had 10m to spare randomly I'm sure as shit not using it to sit idle waiting on a Zoom to begin.

3-5 minutes just in case you have a connectivity issue or need to adjust camera or microphone settings. I have held about 40 interviews in the past 9 months. I bet 20% had camera or microphone issues, arrived after the scheduled time and some never were able to get their camera on. Then there was the candidate that wore a t-shirt.

Lol. Add this to the list of reasons why I never want to be a hiring manager... I cannot imagine trying to see past some of this shit as an interviewer. Plus I set insanely high standards that I'm sure almost no one would meet. I'd be a nightmare.

10+ minutes before and I’ll think the person is a moron and not good with computers or technology. Bad idea.
Maybe 3-4 min

I always do 5 minutes before. Gives me time to get myself situated, make sure my camera angle isn't weird, my headphones are working, zoom doesn't decide to randomly update, etc.

I literally do it within 0-2 min before. If it's anything above 5, I think it's a bit excessive especially given how seamless Zoom is.

I had a zoom interview that the interviewer was 30 minutes late due to “technical issues”. I ended up not getting the job because about 20 minutes into the interview my blind puppy started stirring and looking to jump into my lap. Interviewer said I was “distracted”.

Only way I see this being logical is that sometimes I’ve had weird technical issues with zoom while a new computer or something like that. 10 mins give you more than enough times to address any audio or video issues that may arise. The recruiter has probably just dealt with some really shitty people trying to give relevant advice that doesn’t apply.

Zoom is easy and no need to join more than 1-3 min beforehand.   HOWEVER, MS Teams is a complete train wreck and the worst software of any video call application I have ever used in my entire career.   Its absolute garbage.  If your meeting is on teams, join at LEAST 10 min before.
