1099 trying to get into tech sales.

I've been 1099 selling Health Insurance for the last 3 years with over 7 additional years of sales experience.

I've been surprised by the amount of AE roles that have been turning me down, but after speaking with some of my pals in the industry, a lot of tech companies are reluctant when hiring people with sales experience outside of the industry.

For what it's worth, I've been in what is equivalent to "Presidents Club" all three years that I've been with my current company, made over 6 figures in straight commission all three years.

I generate the majority of my own leads, landing pages, funnels, etc.

Is there something that I should be doing differently with my approach?

Lots of healthtech companies hiring right now! Your resume & Linkedin profile will be important to crossing the bridge into tech. Example - you made the translation above "equivalent to President's Club" - which calls out something is different. Start by finding 10 positions in healthtech you're interested in, and scan those job postings and websites for keywords, phrases, trends, etc. - and build those into your resume & Linkedin profile. Walks like a duck, talks like a duck, must be a duck.

Have you pointed toward insurance tech? It's alive and well. Good niche, too. Your skills are likely transferable.

You have Sarasota Ford next to your name. If you're selling insurance and cars, maybe you should check your resume for typos.

If you having this much success why switch industries? Just curious on the why

Do you know anyone currently in tech sales that can potentially refer you?

I pay for all of my leads. So I'm investing half of my weekly earnings into new leads each week. Also, the culture/support is non-existent, and selling B2C seems redundant nowadays.

The short answer is, I'm complacent and want to get out of my comfort zone.

If you're doing so well in your current gig, why are you looking around? Serious question. The grass is never greener and you seem to be doing well in what you're now doing.

I'd rather work for a company that doesn't pay as much but gives me much more purpose to work towards.

Update: I reached out to one of my friends from my hometown and have an interview set up with a Leader in B2B Data Providers.

Great start!

Was going to chime in and just say it's very hard to get a tech sales job right now, even if you're in tech. You're competing against people who have been in the industry right now, and it's hard. Most of what you're experiencing is common right now, so try to remain positive and focus on the things you do that are relevant in any industry. Success metrics are good things to highlight.

Better be 6 sense or zoom info.

If it's a list broker you're better off sticking where you are.

"Turning you down for being reluctant when hiring people with sales experience outside of the industry".
Is that what THEY (The Companies) say as a rejection reason ,or that was just something you've elicited cuz of the multiple unjustified turndowns you've faced and only just based on your pals sayings?
And if it was your own conclusion, what was the actual reason they had to come up with in terms of not accepting you, in order for you to validate it&work on it and for us to give a proper feedback about it!!
