3rd Party Sales Reps

Has anyone here have any experience working with, for or managing 3rd party sales reps/agencies?

Its a very common thing in the industry I have to work with reps who carry multiple lines of product. I manage an agency in one of my areas, it is all very new for me and its meant handing off an area I have spent the last year developing to a bunch of people not directly employed by me but rather working on a commission only basis at the same time as selling several other lines not related to me.

The positives to it are, they tend to have good relationships already with my clients due to dealing with them on other lines so it can make opening doors easier and faster and they are boots on the ground so I can travel less. The negatives I see right now, I dont know yet if they are going to attack it with the same fervency as I did because of everything else they do/sell.

Anyone got any experience in working like this? Be interested to hear both sides, if you worked at a rep agency what did you look for from your vendors?

This may be a little niche considering most here are in tech but its worth an ask.

Working with these 3rd parties is a double edged sword. On one hand they can walk you right into a client you usually would have a tough time accessing. On the the other, you're competing against all the other products they represent.

They are typically money oriented. So show them how they will make money with you and they will be your best friend. Its pretty simple.

I haven't, but your concerns are valid. They do have a ton to manage/sell, so I'm not sure you'll get the attention you need for those prospects.

Agree with what everyone else has said, biggest one is showing them how you can make them more money and the simplicity around it. If it is not over complicated and they can see how they will make more $$ they will want to push your product over others.

We worked with 2 and it never worked for us. Either we are not getting any SQL or very bad qualified leads who don’t even have a need (passed to us just to get their money)

I have with a few different 3rd party companies. It was difficult as they usually work multiple accounts and a lot of times don't share info freely. Not a fan of it and didn't produce a lot for us, but it was free through our distribution partners, so can't complain too much. I wouldn't pay for it though

My only experience has been on outsourced lead gen, never goes the way you want.

This sounds different in that these reps have some level of experience, plus they know your customers. Have you worked with them before? Can you meet with them to review what's going on, or because they're commission-only, is that not an option?

Managing third party reps/agents has always and will always be difficult since you have very little influence on how they run their business. It's up to you to do your due diligence to make sure they match up well with your org.

I've worked for some companies in the past that have utilized SDR agencies, and the ROI has never *ever* made sense. I work in tech sales though, so if your SDRs and Sales Reps aren't trained up on the tech they're going to have a bad time.
