$500K OTE and above

I'm an individual contributor salesperson with about 20 YoE seeking my next career step and this year am pacing towards about $400K in TC. If you're currently making more than $500K in sales and are up for a networking conversation where I can ask you some career mentorship questions please DM me.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I have met people who have made that kinda of money for 1-2 years but usually (1) it takes a few years to build to this & (2) their company will neuter that comp plan pretty fast if they think they can.

I did meet a guy over the summer who’s #1 guy made $1.2m last year selling office automation and was poised to keep it up for a while supposedly.

Can you elaborate on “office automation” for the back of the class? 😅

Ideally consistently above $500K TC and sometimes near or beyond $1M. I know these roles exist, have met folks before with them, and am seeking to network further with people in this segment.

I’m not trolling. I spoke on the phone with a former colleague from a previous employer today who did $800K last year and has multiple reps on their team who have surpassed $1M, but part of that was because of RSUs. (Edited for grammar)

I mean to your point , although possible obviously, I feel like a salesperson making consistently 500K + per year for an extended period of time is very rare. That is a lot money , so it will usually be a one off, and if not it’s only a matter of time before the company changes compensation and takes more of the share. But I could be wrong.

I agree. I’ve only seen someone with a 1m+ year twice, maybe three times at most. Once you do it, finance finds a way to fix the comp plans. I could only see this happening at a Snowflake-type where all the stars align for you.

Yeah, it's usually either a gold-plated arms dealer making that kind of money, or someone who caught a company at the right time on the way up and has a ton of equity that actually became something.
I've known reps to hit $500K OTE every 8-10 years or so, but not every year.

After 5 or 10 years of experience, there are sales roles that pay this in some industries if you (and your product) are performing well. Still some luck involved of course, but, though it's a cheesy saying, I really do believe that “hard work increases the surface area of luck”.
One of my mentors speaks about the three Ts: territory, timing, talent. Success in each of these domains can be a combination of self improvement in your career and luck. When I walk around a marina in a major coastal city and see a bunch of yachts or through a neighborhood with giant houses, I think to myself if even one percent of the folks who made this kind of money have advice that I can replicate and apply in my own life then I still have a nontrivial shot at this kind of success if I ask enough of them how they did it and then follow the advice that resonates with me.
In the days since my original post, I've had several networking calls with folks who are making more than me and have been kind enough to offer actionable advice in my specific situation.
There are no shortage of companies willing to underpay vs. what you could make out there. My advice in response to your question is to have open comp conversations with people in your network who are comfortable doing so and with those senior to you, then ask them what they’d do in your shoes to make more money.
A few years ago I had a call with a mentor who held a leadership role at a large organization and assumed they were making $300K-ish and when I mentioned my comp aspirations at that time, their response was:
"Great, after you hit that level, work on breaking past $1M anually. I haven't made less than $1M/year for more than 10 years now."
I was really surprised and didn't even know this was possible in their role in the industry segment we were a part of at the time. But, I'm grateful to have had that conversation. Besides, I find these conversations to be inspiring and a lot of fun. Self-limiting beliefs are real and eliminating them won’t guarantee success, but the presence of them sure can reduce outcomes.
