A common background I have seen in all toxic coworkers.

So I have been reflecting on coworkers I have had in all workplaces, bosses as well, that were toxic and seemed to be the ones more into drama than the actual job. This is also true for those who were power hungry and trying put their nose into the business of others than doing the job. In almost all of them, I have noticed one thing to be common in their background.

They were either spoiled or came from a spoiled background.

Almost all of them went to a private school, were homeschooled by wealthy parents, or grew up in very wealthy areas.

Now I cannot say that everyone who went to a private school is toxic but rather that the toxic people at work I did run into seem to all have had the stereotypically spoiled upbringing.

Private school, Greek Life in college, private university that their parents paid for, etc.

It seems like almost all of them care little about the actual job of sales or learning new things. They care more about trying to have power over people or stirring the pot to where the whole office is gossiping about something rather than actually doing the job.

I don't disagree but I wouldn't limit to those who grew up wealthy.

I don’t disagree but that’s not always the smoking gun.

How do you define toxic? I know you said into drama vs the actual role. Is it that they gossip?

Maybe it’s that I work remotely, but haven’t ran into anyone I would deem toxic in the workspace. I had managers who were huge micromanagers or co-workers who were bad at the job and annoying but no one toxic.

Or maybe I am just the toxic one

Lol, like that old saying, there’s a jerk in every group, and if you can’t figure out who the jerk is, it’s probably you?

I think entitlement is just one kind of toxicity. There are others.

Bulldozer, passive aggressive, complainer, knowledge hoarder, gossips, prideful, and underperformer to name a few. ( https://www.business.com/articles/do-you-have-a-toxic-employee/)

Odds are the entitled people just rub you the wrong way the most. I struggle with it a lot too as someone who worked a lot of shit jobs and went to a D3 state school. But people who grew up in a paycheck-to-paycheck house can be assholes too.

Do you agree that an under performer is a toxic employee?

I think a lot of these are negative traits not really toxic

I think we see underperformer a different way in sales than most other parts of the business. I think the underperformer they were talking about had more to do with people not doing the work. I pictured it as someone who needs to assemble 100 widgets per hour and only does 50.

In sales, anyone can hit a cold snap. But if their outbound activities are there and they are just not able to get people to say yes, I don't think that is toxic.

I somewhat agree about the background because I have seen people from all the background having that trait.

Makes sense, in most cases, people with a background like this tend to be more entitled at work too. Wouldnt limit this to them only though, I`ve had some backstabbing colleagues on the salesfloor that came from more than modest families.. (when i say backstabbing, i mean stealing leads and deals, i couldn't care less for office gossip :D )

There definitely seems to be a larger representation in that group but I've seen a fair share of people who came from nothing be incredibly toxic too. I think it's all how a person takes their life experiences and applies them to their life.

It’s a matter of upbringing I don’t disagree, however I’ve also seen wealthy people be very strict and not hand everything to their children

Hmm interesting…while I recall one being like that…others whom I feel are into politicking and such came from humble backgrounds and usually tend always escalate arguments into personal things and saying I have a higher role than you…inferiority complex basically. And all the team have that so I see it on the other end of the spectrum

So, most people I know did not plan on becoming a sales person initially, it just happened. So, curious to know how my fellow warriors here ended up in sales anyway ? The more interesting stories the better..!!
