AITA

a prospect, after a short discovery call where we agreed I could come to site for a better understanding of his issues, then followed up the next morning with an email

in it he asked, no, demanded I give him customer contact details of individuals I've worked with before we progress so he can see what experience they've had with me

I'm the founder of my own company so I get a bit of rope here

Am I the asshole for politely declining his request given that we haven't met before. I don't want to give out my customers numbers to prospects (all of whom i have a good relationship and want to see me succeed) in the same way I'd imagine he would not like me to discuss any of his business with others

anyway he hasn't replied after I offered him some expert consultancy in lieu of references for now. and bloody hell, if he goes through my process and thinks I'm a fit I offered him a site visit to one of my customers

thoughts please. should I have handled this differently

thanks

You’ve done the right thing. We don’t offer references without knowing we are vendor of choice and a contract is ready for signature.

100%.

Otherwise people would stop acting as a reference... Can't be called all the damn time by any old tire kicker.

This person wasn’t going to buy from you anyway. You did the right thing. In my company we don’t give out contact details if our references until it’s the last thing before signing the contract. I tell people that we value and respect our clients time to highly to have them bombarded by constant reference calls.

Downvote brigaders are back, G...

I lost 14 in commish despite upvotes in 15 minutes this morning.

Are you guys looking at putting anything in place to stop this?

Downvoting is normal and fine, but when someone does dozens of comments at once it's obviously a personal attack.
@CuriousFox , @RandyLahey , @poweredbycaffeine and many others know what I'm talking about...

Absolutely

@CuriousFox 's comment above saying 'agreed' was just downvoted within 5 minutes...

I can't imagine what I've gotten today that have been hidden/offset by upvotes.

I watched my commission yesterday for 20 minutes. It was being downvoted -60 then -50 then -90 etc etc. Then points would go back up a little, then BAM at the high negative numbers. This was early afternoon.

60? 90? I mean those are huge brigading numbers. Why?

You are definitely not the asshole. You handled this perfectly. This seems to be becoming a thing lately. "You want my time? Send me 10 people who think it'll be MY FUCKING TIME well spent." Nooooo... that's not how it works. You trust first, then verify. 100% properly handled.

NTA. Had a similar situation a couple months ago where someone wanted two references up front before confirming VOC. Shut that down and moved in a different direction.

Nope, you did nothing wrong. I'm also going to guess he wasn't going to be making any of those calls anyway.
