AM with less than a year of experience

What's up sales fam,

I'm in a upsell/cross sell role with an ADS of 50-100K looking to break into new logo. I've got less than a year of experience, but I consistently overachieved as an SDR, and so far as an AM.

It's a tough job market right now. A lot of companies want experienced sales people who have at least a year of experience in new logo.

I need a leader who's willing to take a bet on me. Does anyone know any companies like that or how I can find them?

P.S - Looking in software or health tech.

If you want to look at @Gasty 's old post with the list of companies hiring I would start there since its hard enough to find people hiring.

I would also use the filters on LinkedIn so you are seeing sales roles that are looking for people with 1-2 years of experience, compared to seeing Enterprise roles with 10 years minimum

Sorry, you're not likely to get a referral from the anonymous forums. However, the link and referral to Gasty's list will get you at least to some places to start.

You're going to need a lot of persistence and be prepared for a fair amount of rejection right now. It's a buyer's market with all the layoffs, so you're going to have to really stand out and overcome the lack of experience. Less than a year at AM is not going to make it easy for you - but know that going in.

Was accurate 2-3 weeks ago, not sure about today. But a good place to start.

Is it because you are not liking your job or you think you can earn more as an AR?

At the moment it’s a thought market as you mentioned plus you lack of relevant experience that would make it difficult for sure. Some of my amazing peers are finding it tough to get the desired role. As bunny mentioned, it’s the buyers market. If you want someone to bet on you, you will also have to bet on companies willing to hire you and the best place is to look at small start ups that can your entry point but again not guaranteed considering the market. Wish you the best !

Correct, not liking my job. I’m a hunter, and I really want a hunting role.

I don’t like farming. I’ve gotten into 2 finals rounds and had dozens of conversations. Just trying to widen my search at this point.

If I were you, I’d stick to cross-sells and up-sells in this market and ace the role.

Was there something in particular that prompted your search? You defeated your own argument by saying "It's a tough job market right now". Indeed it is...I'd be careful right now as I think there's a further leg down.

Look at our Jobs tab, peruse LinkedIn, use Glassdoor for culture and RepVue for $.

Good luck.

Ideal gig in today’s environment with your experience level is heavy inbound. They tend to hire grit. But you’ve got to find one with a seat. Otherwise, don’t ever be scared to bet on your own talent. Go get what you want…might just be a fight for a while. Good luck!

Thank you for your insight, and I agree. It has been a grind for about 3-4 months. I've learned a lot, and the rejection has given me a lot of motivation to keep pushing for what I want.

It hasn't been all rejection though. I've had tons of conversations, had two final round interviews and learned where my blind spots are so I can anticipate them early on.

i doubt glass door will be helpful at all here. how would you use that to find a leader who takes bets on less experienced sales ppl?

i would stay where you are and make sure you do well.

you HAVE to excel are your current job before you try to get an AE role. It will make it much easier when you can say you had sustained success closing deals and now you want to try new logos.

Thank you. My manager was awful and did more harm than good. In my first quarter he didn’t coach, train or prepare me. When he did give me advice, it backfired in the real world. He then put me on a PIP, and took the one deal away from me that would have gotten me to my number. When I didn’t hit, he fired me. Unfortunate, but I’m honestly glad that I’m out of that situation. It was causing me a lot of stress and he is a different breed. Not the good kind.
