Are you friends with your competition?

I have worked at a few companies in my space and have gotten to know a number of the sales guys from my competitors.

Most are pretty cool dudes and we catch up and get drinks at conferences. Then go back and try to steal each others customers ๐Ÿ˜‚

I feel like this is pretty unique since we are pretty cool and try to understand how its really going at each company but keep things pretty close to the chest as well.

I even got a friend of mine a job at a competitor.

Anyone else in this boat?

Do you view it as a good thing?

Keep your friends close and your enemiesโ€ฆ You know.

I love it. Itโ€™s a healthy way to play the game and it allows you to add more storytelling opportunities to your toolbox.

A funny quote, but we're not cagefighters here. Most of us sell software. I think it's good to keep things in perspective.

Funnily enough, I had some friends who fought amateur and pro MMA - trust me, you're probably already making more than 90% of them will.

I mean, just because they work somewhere else, doesn't mean they aren't cool people. I have met a ton of people working in the same space that I'd get a drink with.

thats legit. i feel like thats the best place to be.

Now, there are a few competitors that i really do not like, and feel like they have made really poor choices from a moral stand point. but its really the CEO and the Marketing leader that are the source. all the other ppl are just trying to make a living so im cool with them.

People that are dicks to their competition just seem like they're not good at sales.

Healthy competitions don't hurt anybody! You might learn a few things from them or they can learn a few from you. It's a part of growth I'd say.
I think it's awesome to keep competitors as friend's as long as you don't give away your client's deets. On the other hand taking those deets is cool :P

Not at the moment but it's absolutely a good thing. We're all just people, and you never know what might happen in the future. They could be someone in your network that helps you get a job a couple of years from now.

We're selling somebody else's software!

I have friends at my #1 competitor, mainly because I worked with them for over 5 years. Now, itโ€™s so violently competitive between us that weโ€™ll acknowledge the connections but wouldnโ€™t be seen in public with each other. Itโ€™s just accepted that weโ€™re after each otherโ€™s customers and thirsty for each otherโ€™s blood. I sort of like it.

One day you're competitors and the next you could be co-workers. Don't judge people based on where they work.

I know quite a few people in the same industry as me, some are friends - others acquaintances.
However, the one thing I never, ever do is speak negatively about competitors in the industry. It has an absurdly negative effect, and many times I've found that if I actually praise my competitors in front of potential customers, it strengthens my own position and my product.
But yeah, I have friends who work for competitors. And it's damn fun to steal customers from each other.

Niche space so I see them often at tradeshows/conferences, few nice guys there even some who I worked in the past, so yes.

Gotta keep your sales hire bench full. No better place to start than with the people you compete with.

I treat it like pro sports. I might coach the Steelers today, but Iโ€™d love to steal Myles Garret from the Browns.

Our tech space and product line is cut throat and people shoot each other dirty looks at conferences and do not talk to one another. Itโ€™s brutal. Also most people are super technical and nerdy, so donโ€™t have very good social skills.
