Base vs Variable comp?

Some friends of mine at my former company (SaaS) just had their comp plan changed to decrease variable comp and increase salary to offset, no change in OTE, or there would have been riots.

Im curious what the preference is? I can see benefits to both... little bit more stability with a higher salary for the occasional down month (and maybe some increased self-worth), but potentially higher commissions for overachievement...

Where would everyone want the weight of their comp?

50/50 is good for me, as long as the base is high enough.

It's an interesting question. There are a lot of companies that are making similar shifts. Monday.com, for example, has gone all the way to the right and they don't have any variable comp but higher guarantees. For example, I think their Mid-Market reps make like 180k but they actually get paid that and no opportunity for variable. This, obviously, would be vs let's say a 250k OTE where only 125 is guaranteed. Very interesting indeed.

I’m on a 70:30 plan. Works well for me since there’s a sizable base and the 30 pushes me enough too.
