Bereavement for a dog?

So somehow my SDR was able to go on a 2 week long bereavement after losing his families dog... I don't have any clue how this was approved. Has this happened to anyone before, or is my company just the softest company on earth? I'd love to get some time off when my fish accidentally went for a walk down the toilet however I'm clearly clueless on when time off should be approved and when it shouldn't be. I went to our HR lady and she said he was going through a really hard time and it was the least the company could do. I feel like its me vs the world.

PS RIP Scruffy (I love dogs just don't think you need 2 weeks off when they die)

I think you are just salty. Does it happen regularly? Probably not. Is it your place to judge? No.ย

If I were an owner, I would give myย employees pet bereavement. I'd like to think it would serve me well in the long run.ย

You're right I am salty. My dog fucking sucked so I don't know what it's like to have a pet that I actually enjoyed being around.ย

As someone who has owned golden retrievers, rottweilers, mastiffs, and pitbull mixes all I'm going to say is it's a good thing I'm not in HR at your company

Losing a dog is terrible, but two weeks does sound excessive. That said, he might be going through other issues that you don't know about and the dog death was just the cherry on top of the shit cake.

Agreed on this one. Two weeks sounds like a lot for a pet (a coworker of mine asked a week for his mom and then came back). I think there is more to itย

You went to HR to complain about this? I agree 2 weeks is a really long time, but complaining to HR is incredibly excessive, even if you disagree with the decision.

Ugh the agony and grief of losing your dog. It's soul crushing.

Also HR doesn't have to tell you what an employee is going through. Obviously something is up so much they made the decision to give that person leave.

Seriously, an employee that's unwell will do you zero good. Let them heal. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ•

A dog can be as important as any family member.ย  Better to have let the SDR time grieve over it than to be depressed at work.ย  You might get better results.

Yes, your company is the softest company on earth. That said, take note and take advantage of it. You're lucky.

I needed a few days after my Saint Bernard died. When my current animals die, I'll definitely need some time too. A full two weeks seems excessive. Wrigley died on Thursday afternoon (I took off that afternoon to say goodbye before she was put to sleep) and I was back at work on Tuesday - still sad of course, but functioning.

Thank you! This was five years ago but we still miss her. We did take her ashes with us from Texas and she sits on our window looking over Central Park!

Is this the same rep you complain about in your other posts?

"appropriate use of PTO"
"bereavement for a dog"
"how do you manage sales reps you can't stand?"

Or...do you have multiple reps that all just piss you off?ย

I took two days when my dog passed. It was unexpected, and not peaceful. My VP told me to take any time I needed. Yea, two weeks is excessive, but they might have some other shit going on in their life. Mental health is way down right now.

As a leader, you're not really showing any empathy towards your reps. In another post you told me I would never last at your company because I was soft after I said that my team trusts me to be an adult and I'm not required to give a reason to take off and asked if you don't trust them. I wouldn't want to work for someone that doesn't trust me, and has to constantly micro manage my time.ย

If your reps aren't delivering, fire them. If they are, leave them alone and let them be adults and manage their time how they want.ย

I work the veterinary space, so bereavement time for pets is pretty much a given. It happens and people DO need it. Two weeks is a little much, but Iโ€™ll tell you as someone who literally works in the pet cemetery/cremation business, for some people? That dog is ten times more important to them than their own mother. Our pet cemetery has people buried in it because they couldnโ€™t bear being apart from their pets. We have people who have paid for cremation services or burials for goldfish. People LOVE their animals.

Bereavement for a dog? Don't get me wrong, I love dogs. But 2 days for a pet would be abusive let alone 2 weeks.ย

2 weeks is a bit excessive but a few days is reasonable. Having your dog die is pretty awful.

As a fellow complainer I feel your pain. People on my team, especially essential ones that I rely on to close deals (read engineers) go on leave all the time leaving me out there flapping in the wind. I love getting a call at the end of the quarter about deals that arenโ€™t closed while the entire fucking engineering team took last minute PTO. As a dog owner whoโ€™s had a dog for 12 years thatโ€™s been there for me at the best and worst times of my life I will be devastated when the inevitable happens. Loving a dog is making a pact with grief. โ€œGive me a few good years and then you can take emโ€. For some people...a dog is the first or ONLY thing in their life that has ever showed them unconditional love. I would try some empathy.

Idgaf, I respect this.

You have no idea what other issues they're facing and if this has compounded anything.

The burn & churn for SDR's is too real and having someone feel respected at work is only going to motivate them in the long run.ย

idk if 2 weeks is warranted, but I'll say this.ย  My dog was hit by a car and killed in February last year, on the day I was packing up and moving across the country, and it was honestly one of the shittiest days of my life.ย  I've lost relatives and friends, but losing my dog in the way that it happened really took a toll on me.ย  I could have used a few days off after that.

That sounds like a load of bullshit to me... I lost my dog when I was 9 years old and guess who showed face at school the next day?? Sounds like your SDR is softer than Charmin Ultra Soft Diamond Weave Mega Rolls.

Companies are focusing more and more on mental wellness. I assume this is another way of showing they care. I actually love this though, and would ask why men need 3-4 months off for their wives/baby mamaโ€™s giving birth. Yet your best friend dies and are expected to go back to work like nothing has changed?

I think it depends on the employee's situation. For some people dogs are no more than pets but for others they are almost like children. It is kinda the same for family members, how do I know this guy was close to his grandparent or aunt? At the end it is left to HRs discretion.
