Better production?

At the company I worked for, selling computer software, there was a room where there was a pool table, pinball and 2 Playstaion 4. Do you think this distracts the employee or helps them to produce better? Why?

I think the idea of an area to decompress is great - and from a manager perspective, it would help to gauge who is actually working, instead of people doing unproductive shit discreetly at their desks.

I would add to that - somewhere comfy to sit. Like a some lounge chairs or couches or something where we could put our feet up. It’s my biggest gripe with working in the office. I’m physically uncomfortable the entire time. If I had a place to chill while checking emails or mundane tasks I’d get a lot more done and have a better attitude.

My last company had awesome lounge areas in the offices.    Comfy sofas, quiet nooks...if I didn't WFH, I would have totally been in those spots rather than at my desk.

Lololol worked for a recruiting conpany that had this same type of “best place to work atmoshere” it was frowned upon when anyone used any of it. Don’t tempt me with a good time and think I wont bite employer…

One of the most effective and efficient team I run used a foosball table we had at the office. It was around 10-12 people with their manager, and I can tell you at least 6-7 of them played regularly. Once a day, maybe twice. I don't think it distracted them at all, it actually helped them focus more in my opinion. The key to that was their manager, who was 100% clear with them on what she expected and she fostered a sense of responsibility that helped the team self-manage. I think it was great actually.

I love this type of thing, I have ADHD so being able to have different things to focus on for certain periods of time really helps with my motivation levels and my productivity

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
No issue with it so long as people get their tasks done.

Always a way to waste time if you want to.

self-discipline and routine matter more.

I think it will depend on the person. For me, things like this would boost my morale and help me with my creativity. Being able to go into a "blank state of mind" or "white space" during the workweek  also helps towards getting better rest and a bunch of other things that I can't remember ATM.

I think it's good when it's properly separated. I've been at a place where there was a foosball table right by/in the sales floor. It was distracting for everyone.

Echoing the thoughts about area to decompress.

Much of the time it definitely screams douchey frat boy start up a little bit to me though

Sales is damn tough. We all need to decompress from time to time. Not understanding and supporting that will lead to employee burnout and churn

I work in one those types of environments currently.  We have a "quiet room" that has been renamed the cry room and a slide to go from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor.

The cry room has leather couches to relax on and very low lighting.  It is the perfect place to catch a quick cat nap or cry when a deal ghosts you at the end of the month.  That room is used fairly often and a good place to recharge.

The slide on the other hand was used maybe once or twice in the first month but now just collects dust because everyone is sick of the static build up and shocking anyone they touched after.

Basically all of that is just marketing driven to try and make a relaxing place to work but we know sales is never relaxing.

This is a perk to me. At the end of the day it is about performance against the numbers.

Especially now in the time of fully remote work, managers cant see exactly what you are doing all day, but why should they care, unless you are not hitting the metrics that have been laid out for you.

I used to murder the foosball table at a previous company. I found it helped. I would segment my day and reward success and productivity with a small foosball break.

If a “decompress area” (game room, etc distracts your people to the point where it’s an issue. You prolly need to hire new people

Keep the fun and games to a minimum. We are here to work; not play. Want to play? Go home early.

You have to know how to measure the time you spend relaxing with the time you spend working. If you can close your goals, great. If not, immediately stop being distracted.

We’re in sales. People can goof of and need to to stay sane. Why not give them a room to do so. That way it s also physically divided from their workspace.

I don't think it's distracting, it even increases productivity, because you're more relaxed, but you have to use it sparingly.

taken 15 mins to have a game or two of pool would 100% benefit myself and my team!
