Buying a Ring, does 3 months salary include commission?

already bought a ring but was talking with another rep about this today. The saying is 3 months salary for an engagement ring, unless you are Michael Scott.

but are just talking base or also part of the sweet commish check?

If you are doing 3 months salary for a ring does that include commission?

When I proposed I was just starting in sales and couldn't close a damn door let alone a client. Needless to say money was tight.

Instead of a honking big diamond on some cookie-cutter ring, I went to a place that worked with me to custom design the engagement ring. We made a beautiful victorian-style white gold ring that had some celtic knotwork, rose-gold scrollwork and emeralds beside the small diamond.

My wife says it means so much to her that I took into account her taste and made something that is 100% custom for her.

To start, I sneakily took photos of her existing jewelry, including all the pieces I know she really likes then used that to start looking online for designs I liked and incorporated them all together.

Just got engaged recently too, so congrats! I think the three months thing is a bit out dated and more of a sales tactic to make you feel like you need to keep up with people you donโ€™t even know.

If you are in sales, it better be designed by you. Donโ€™t be cheap.

@Kosta_Konfucius: Firstly, congratulations!

Secondly,I know of couples who've later regretted spending a bomb on a ring that they could've spent on multiple vacations.

I'm not saying don't spend a lot on the ring. I'm saying just don't be one of them, and you'll be good :)

Bought it and have been able to fully pay it off. I believe I found a happy medium of getting a ring she loves and we wouldnt be in debt over it.

Have her help you when looking at things. I'm sure this isn't something that will surprise her that you are looking. Unless she has absolutely no idea that you want to marry her, then there are other conversations that need to be happening.

The 3 months thing is such BS - it's all marketing!!!

And how do we feel about marketing around here!?

That being said, don't cheap out and get something nice. I lucked out with having an heirloom diamond ring I could use that's real nice and over 100 years old :)

You can't cheap out on this, but on the flip side, it isn't about the exact amount of $$ that you put in. I'm fairly sure the "this must cost you x number of months salary" was started by the jewelry industry. Get her a ring she likes, and it will all work out. The diamond or center stone can be replaced later if you want.

Congratulations!

Don't base it off your salary - base it off what she wants (within reason).

Do people actually do 3 months salary these days? Average engagement ring I thought was about 10k. 3 months for salespeople would be closer to 30k which seems crazy

Some people do, I didnt just b/c that is just so much money and honestly she probably wouldnt want something that big.

The price of a ring varies so much now with lab grown diamonds

That 3-month thing is a scam... buy what fits your budget.
Get them a ring they like, and don't surprise them with a pillow cut or something they don't want. Go shopping together. See what they like then buy in secret and pop the question. That's the surprise they want.

The 3 month salary was a marketing tactic by DeBeers Diamonds. Spend what is comfortable for you.

I didn't use any of the traditional rules.

I had one of her friends take her to look "for fun" one day at the mall. sent me pictures of the ones she liked. Then I decided what I could afford and went shopping.

At the income level of those of us in sales, 3 months salary would be an astronomical amount to spend on a ring. And in my opinion, quite a dumb amount to spend on something like that.

That rule was literally created by jewelry companies to convince men to spend more, which was then aided by offering financing on said jewelry.

My wife doesnt like diamonds, our engagement ring was $400 and her wedding band was $1000. My band was the same as her engagment ring. Buy what makes sense not what the industry is telling you.

Base ps, not commission, but buy what works

I'd say base, unless your commission is almost always the same and you are in a good spot financially.

Listen my man, the 3 month salary thing was created by the jewelry industry to make you pay more money and improve their profits. Ask what your SO wants and base it off that. Letโ€™s say you want to get a 1 carat diamond, did you know that getting a .9 carat diamond vs a 1 will save you almost 1000 dollars and the difference can never be noticed. Make smart decisions, a nice house to live in is a lot better than spending 10k extra for a ring

FEELINGS- Your commission is annual (ARR) but the customer paid monthly (MRR) and if there is a churn in the next few months, the company will deduct by increasing your quota and taking the equivalent amount $$ from your quota in the next month.
