Commission stories: Good and bad

These didn't happen to me, but we're told to me.

The good:

Someone at a SAAS company made a 50m commission last year? Is this even possible? Would be curious about deal size etc.

Question: largest commission that you've made or a colleague made

The bad: Someone who worked at a hardware company had a 10m quota. A certain client suddenly wanted to do a 50m refresh. His commission would've been 500k (remember hardware not SAAS). They ended up adjusting it to 25k, because they can. He left.

Question: Has a company ever adjusted your variable when they knew you had a big deal coming, blue bird or not?

Have had the "big deal" clause enforced on me before. My SVP went to bat and made sure I got the best deal possible, which was satisfactory, all things considered.

But back to your anecdote, I'm not sure I'm buying a 50M payout on SaaS. Government orders (where is @LordOfWar ?) maybe have some nice commissions; possibly massive deals like big Airbus or Boeing orders, but I'm having a difficult time believing that a SaaS deal would get that much. Seems a little friend of a friend of a cousin heard about it kind of thing.

50M is like ten X the highest I've heard so I find it very hard to believe.

Yeah, itโ€™s that mythical huge deal that everybody hears about, but nobody has details. Spoken about in hushed whispers โ€ฆ. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'm definitely not buying that big of a payout.
And where IS @LordOfWar !? Haven't seen him around in forever.

Long story short, company went bankrupt after closing a tranched 2.5M deal (Y1 500K arr, Y2, 1M, Y3 2M) I was on a 10%~ commission structure, solidly losing 200K over a 3 year span.
Thank you COVID.

Add in I was employee number 40 with a promising ESOP, it was a brutal letdown that year.

So there is good news to my story. Apparently the guy left after they cut his commission. He had a huge follow up deal that died. He went to another company and his boss eventually follows him there. And of course, she redoes his comp plan. And of course he leaves. Company folds within a year after he leaves.

The bad: Helped with the renewal side for a $110MM ELA with IBM. Got paid a whopping $3k in commission off of that. I quit a couple weeks later.
