Comp Plan Not Yet Given (New Job)

I may consult with someone but wanted advice from the hive-mind here first on my situation. TLDR - no variable/quota comp plan 6 weeks in

  • Was laid off and took best offer, even though it was under past comp
  • Best offer wouldn't do ramp but was told by executive we would adjust the variable comp plan so I could hit my full variable in my first quarter
  • 6 weeks in, and no quota plan has been presented thus far. I've asked my boss 3 times in weeklies (this is documented in writing too) to even see the old one for context.
  • 1 - Boss is open to me creating a plan for additional comp beyond the standard plan but there's no benchmarks for outbound KPIs or even accurate pipeline generation for me to pull something reasonable
  • 2 - Not sure how to broach the variable comp topic again. I want to send a formal email referencing the 3 dates it was brought up, etc. and the impact to low key start a paper trail, but also don't want to piss anyone off. I was over-sold on items so it's driving me to safeguard myself even more.

Thoughts on how to re-approach?

Thoughts on creative ways to structure comp plans when traditional ideas fall flat?

You don’t have a plan that fell flat. You don’t have a plan at all. At this point, direct to HR. You could reference the trend n full-disclosure pay transparency- and how, in your case, there’s no plan at all. How are you to know if you’re meeting expectations, or even plan, if no targets are set.

Register the concern. It deserves an HR ear.

Rarely do you see Savages suggesting you go to HR. When you do, listen.

That is certainly strange, but at this point you're laying the groundwork for 2024. 2023 is a wash so why even have a comp plan?
How long is your sales cycle?

I would just focus on building pipeline and being able to execute come Jan 1. Unless you think you can retire a full year's worth of quota in 3 months, its not worth bringing up again.

I hear you on this and part of me feels that way too. 6-12 month cycle. They don't have TAM or a lot of things figured out. I guess it's the negotiation piece. They wouldn't go up on base and that's going to be hard. C-Level said I'd get my full variable knowing I wouldn't see closing for awhile when I signed the offer. That should be honored somehow IMO.

Do you have your variable in writing? That should be an easy dollar amount to figure out (whatever they told you OTE is) and you can go to HR to help deal with that. Your actual comp plan - quota, etc. should be separate.

Yes I do. Just the quota/comp plan breakdown is what I need clarity on.

Do you have a team? Like colleagues? Like someone who’s not HR - not your boss - and someone who’s been in the system you can confide in?

Not sure who to trust yet. The other rep left the company so I'm the only person in my segment right now.

Trust the rep who left? Hunt him on LinkedIn?

HA! No. Recent PE firm acquired. Established company, just never set up a lot of internal processes.

It's hindsight but you gotta get eyes on these before even accepting an offer.

Couldn't get a sample comp plan, I tried. Trust me. My base/variable is spelled out in the offer, just the actual plan is a mystery.

I would be very transparent to your hiring manager with your concerns, if still nothing happens, then I would go to HR

Thanks! Yeah my boss was hired just after me, so I knew it was a work in progress. The entire business model may be changing (didn't know this when I signed on) which is affecting the comp structure. Not so cut and dry.
