Nothing too crazy.

First pick up I ever got I was calling a girl and I was nervous and off guard when a man picked up so I said

“Oh hey is this a Nancy?”

“No! This isn’t fucking Nancy! This isn’t Nancy’s number I get 25 fucking cold calls a day. STOP FUCKING CALLING!”

Another dude I called asked how I got his number and I told him we use a service called Apollo and he says “that’s impossible. I got my number removed from Apollo”

And I was like “uhh sorry sir your number is still in Apollo that’s our CRM.”

He then said he was going to file something about our company and Apollo. Next day I checked and his number was scrubbed.

hilariously enough I checked today and his phone number is still on there lol

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
Other than ones which quickly converted to a sale? Those are of most interest to me.

One time after a cold call, which apparently was to some guy's cell phone, I got a text from him which (I HOPE!) was meant for his...if you know what I mean 😘

Here's a funny one:

Once, when I was a first-time mentor for a fresher SDR, I was training her on voicemails. My goal was to get her habituated with the process of getting comfortable with leaving voicemails, and then gradually up the notch by experimenting with value-add voicemails.

Now you might be thinking, you asked for a cold-call experience and why is this idiot talking about voicemails?

Here's why: The last (half-of-a) voicemail my mentee left on that day, was to a prospect who...

...had picked up the phone!

Part2:

The prospect was actually having a good day. So he laughed it off, saying:

"Thanks for your voicemail. I am here. Ha Ha ! Your product seems interesting"

And that's how she got her first meeting!

My old company did these things called “swarms” where they we gather a bunch of people and try and go cold call in person every account that has bought even only once in the past few years, even CC or prepay accounts, even as little as a few dollars. A lot of these accounts were VERY small and used their home as their work address. Cold calling customers at their front door is a very interesting experience lol. Felt like I was trying to sell steak knives.

Caught a dude in his car at a previous employer as he was leaving work. Said the words "we can cut your cloud spend by half" and he was immediately interested. Booked him on the spot and ended up converting a month later.

BDR (Business Development Rep)
A few come to mind. One of my first roles was BDR in the automotive software place. I had the opportunity to dial 80-100 times a day and our ICP was smaller independent car dealers.

To say the least, it helped me cut my teeth, but also led to some interesting conversations.

1 - I remember talking to this car dealer for half an hour. It happened to be my birthday that day so I used that as a way to convince the guy to close the sale - it worked.

2 - When I first started, I remember talking to a car dealer that cursed at me and my mother in his strong New Jersey accent. It shook me and I didn't know what to do.

3 - I spent almost 1 hour on the phone with a car dealer. I got him to the very end where he was down to sign a deal, but the hang-up was he didn't want auto-renewal of his contract. My company at the time didn't allow us to "turn off" auto-renewal, so it killed the deal. Still haunts me.

I'm no longer with this org. We definitely were taught to use sleazy sale tactics just to make the sale happen. It was an absolute boiler room and I learned a lot about myself and about what kind of org I want to work for.

Nothing like breaking into sales with 80-100 cold calls a day!

When I first got into sales, we created our own leads - so of course, I leaned on friends and family.

I called this friend of my dads...

He told me my dad was a drunk, and a prick (more colorfully)...

"You know what - he's not that great of a father either."

*awkward pause followed by uncontrollable laughter*

He agreed to meet with me. That sale was the first I've ever had... We saw each other 10 years later and had a laugh. He still thinks my dad's a prick.

Cheers to Dads of the late 80s, early 90s. We appreciate your lack of effort.
