DetectiveGibbles Friday Coffee with the bros

Myself and 4-5 friends get together every Friday at a local coffee shop. We chat shop, life, marriages, kids, etc.

It's fucking awesome.

Anyway...one of the guys today was talking about his annual review. The last question was "What is an issue you're having?"

His response was "I feel like I'm paid terribly for the amount of work I do". My buddy is a saint, runs the entire kids production for k-5 at our church. He knows he isn't going to get paid much.

However, his boss's response was interesting...

Boss's response was along the lines of....."Your answer was very unprofessional and childish. Our HR team sees these responses along with leadership. We need to chat"

I don't think his response was childish at all. Frankly, I think it was healthy. Do you want your employees to not be honest?

Would love to hear responses on this.

I think it was a healthy response. They asked a question, so he gave an honest answer. IDC if it's a church or not. A business needs to take care of their employees.

I haven't heard many negatives from friends that are employed by this church. This feels like an outlier of a situation.
If I heard correctly, my friend and his boss that gave the response have a 1on1 today. It sounds like the boss may have known he didn't posture his response right.
Sounds like an opportunity to grow. We've all F'd up and made mistakes!

Definition of a toxic culture. You're opinion only matters when it aligns with leadership's ego.

Outside looking in...it doesn't look toxic but more-so this feels like a one off type of situation.
My buddy's wife and my wife are best friends, so I get visibility into his marriage a good bit. He can be a bit dramatic IMO, so I'm thinking he maybe embellished his bosses response a bit...but regardless....I'd rather my employees be honest versus dancing around tough conversations.

That's all kinds of fucked up. I agree with @poweredbycaffeine that he could have worded it more tactfully, ex. my compensation doesn't align with what's expected of me, but otherwise it was honest feedback.

Yep agreed 100%. I told him that too. "Yo boss, I love working here. I feel valued across the board outside of pay. What needs to go right for me to see any type of increase in pay?"

Something along those lines...I've never heard any bad things spoken about his boss (who I respect and consider a friend) but you never know the situation fully and transparently.

Unless itโ€™s a prosperity gospel church, donโ€™t expect to be compensated well for anything ๐Ÿฅด

"I'm paid terribly" could have been written more tactfully, but that is a true and honest response.

Totally agree. We told him that. And I'd guess he did word it differently but let his emotions get the best of him when venting to his friends.

I don't know how your friend communicated it but the boss should have had a better response than that. It's like your friend lit up a fire and the boss threw sime gasoline in it. And then I don't know perhaps it became a pissing contest... I think it's on bosses to do better really and explain why you get what you get or have a conversation on what your friend needs to do.

Yeah it truly sounds like they each fueled it a bit. I'd bet money my buddy embellished it slightly and that the response wasn't THAT harsh. But who knows fully.

Honesty is supposed to be the best policy right? It was a healthy response that resulted in a really unhealthy message from the boss.
Boss sounds like they could do a better job of understanding the employee's issues and getting in front of this, vs. sitting on his ass and having that kind of a response when an issue comes up.

100% - it sounds like the boss asked for another meeting to discuss further. Definitely a growing opportunity for both of them IMO!

Prime example of where buddy should have put his foot in his mouth.
When they ask shit like this you need to be polite and skirt around the truth and being so blunt. Prob could have said it in a nicer way and would have got further with it. I mean honestly he works with children he is not a CEO or vp, why does he think he should get paid premium $$? Go get a better grownup job if want more money.

I hear you. But disagree on the inserting foot in mouth and skirting around the truth.

It's honest feedback. If you want to build a culture of employees that value transparency and honesty, we should encourage them to do exactly that whichever way the communication is flowing.

I didn't say he said premium $$ nor did I say what he actually gets paid (which I do know and it does feel low for his role compared to other churches of our size). As I mentioned, he wasn't asking for the world, merely to be compensated closer to what his role typically gets based on the info he has at hand.

It's a thankless job and he's aware of it. But he pours his heart into it and makes a massive impact, I see it every Sunday as I volunteer in his department.

Ok agree maybe not completely foot in mouth. But maybe tone down what theyโ€™re saying. He prob just should have sat down and brought this up on his own terms rather than during this annual review in which we all know is documented and really a dog and pony show.

Agreed with the majority here. Valid response... maybe lacking some tact. A little data to back up the claim makes it another conversation. We live. We learn.

For sure. I called him on it too. He seemed aware he could have been a bit more reasonable in his response but it was you're typical google form.

He can be a little dramatic according to his wife who's besties with my wife. It's quite funny.

What's unprofessional was they got an answer they didn't like and are trying to make him feel bad for speaking up. I'd report that shit to HR. Fuck it. Burn em all.
