Do companies back off if you are near an offer

From my experience, some do, like "not gonna put you through as a candidate if we're already a week behind." But some have also taken the approach of "can you buy us some time, we like you but we need one more box checked and then we'll put together an order." This is when you start leveraging the offers of course.

Do companies suddenly lose interest if you have an offer?

yes, and no.

Both are right. Some will say

- Well we dont want to rush the process and waste your time or ours so if we can't do the proper interview process we will have to wish you best, Congrats

and others like you said

- We can move some things around and streamline the process what is your timeline? Perfect we can see if we can schedule things soon enough to go through the process.

Either way you should always say you have 2-3 other interview in the process at the same stages or at least one stage ahead because you are a catch, they pay more and you are interviewing here because 'you bEliEvE in the product and company more and lIkE the pEoPle' lol

Assuming you mean Company A learns you have an offer from Company B.

Their response will depend on a few things: are they really interested in you, and do they think you want to come work for them?

If you have an offer or at the final stage for company A, and you just have your first interview with a HR recruiter with company B, I would be surprised if they move you forward unless you are a perfect fit and you say you like company b more.

Agree while it's a numbers game, it's still sort of like dating. You don't want to waste your time and effort for someone that's about to be taken unless they explicitly say they're interested. Otherwise it's "why did you bring this candidate to me?"

I have seen it go both ways. I think it depends on the person that can sell/market themselves not just the company.

it definitely varies. I've had companies ghost me because I have a current offer. And I had one company who liked me so much they got me through their entire interview process in about a week with an offer the following week because they liked me so much and wanted to get me. So it definitely depends on the company and how much they want you.

This really depends on the company. If I'm interviewing a candidate that I feel strongly about that already has an offer on the table, I'll do my best to speed them through our process

It's going to vary with each situation and company, but I believe human nature may play a part. For example, nobody appreciates their time being wasted in a useless interview, and I've seen that happen. We interviewed 22 candidates for four positions, and five candidates told the interview panel upfront that they were only there for the interview experience. Human nature is going to dictate that there would most likely not be much to gain from that interview, in ways of experience.

Even if that were true, I'd never say that. But I do get the tought process of not pushing people through. It's like is it worth the effort when he likely has 48 hours to accept the other offer?

Everyone wants it simple, so mostly yes they do turn off and put you at a backfoot.

NO surprise at all but asked a few recruiter friends and they said they most likely would not present a candidate if they were nearing an offer or were beyond mid-cycle, think final presentation etc.
