Do you judge sales people based on their industry?

A sales friend of mine in the edtech space heard during some interviews in other industries that edtech sales people are looked down upon or judged because education sales are typically more relationship based vs something more hard lines like a challenger mentality. He had to combat the idea that he would be be able to handle tough negotiations. Have any of you heard or experienced the judgement of sales people in certain industries?

No way. We are all THE SAME as salespeople. Hustling to make that dollar and crush quota. Who TF cares what the product others are pushing?ย

I do not judge based on industry. I have met some of the best sales reps and they sell some random stuff that I didn't even know was a thing...and they murder it. Often times its actually harder to sell edTech than other saas.ย

Think about it. Is it harder to sell Outreach to a VP of sales or software to a superintendent of a major school district in NY?

Another example. Imagine selling donor management software to non-profits. Ever sold to a board of directors that know nothing about technology and don't have a process in place to buy technology?

It's like herding cats in hell. I respect the hell out of reps that sell to unique personas. I would imagine its much harder than selling to sales and marketing

This is so true! And being able to stick it out through the brutally long sales cycles in education...

Blow it up
Imagine looking down on someone because they actually forge a relationship with their client when that is the entire job of sales...

Relationships help the negotiation, including the rep getting info outside of the negotiation table. If there is no relationship with the client then it is just a race to zero.

We're all in the same boat, I'm not judging. I believe what I think is easy to sell might be an uphill battle for others and vice versa. I respect all sales people ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
That...is completely ridiculous. Also, EdTech cycles can be brutally long. I don't understand this at all. A good seller is typically a good seller anywhere.

It definitely struck me as a strange sentiment. Glad Iโ€™m not the only one!

As someone who did sell in the edtech space, itโ€™s not always as easy as it seems. Marketing plays a HUGE part in Educatiom & EdTech sales.ย

ย At the school I worked at, their marketing ad made it seem like it was a job. So when I would call out to these leads, they thought they were putting their info in for a job application, not a school. The leads we had were on average between 6months and up to 2 years old. They usually had forgotten about it by the time I called them. So I had to convert them from thinking they were getting a job to getting them to complete our coding challenge and ultimately enrolling them into our coding school. And then we had to sell the LMS system to other universities. Which was insanely hard to even get a hold of the right person. And they always knew more then I did. So getting them to like you & trust you was the only way to sell it.

Now I am in the Vape/Smoke shop and Hemp/Delta8 industry. And I know a lot of people look down on me thinking itโ€™s easy, especially living in Utah. But itโ€™s actually the most competitive, challenging job Iโ€™ve ever had. Itโ€™s a fucking grind like no other, every single month. Itโ€™s like selling chocolate into a chocolate shop. LOL And itโ€™s 10000% relationship based selling. I respect anybody out there grinding. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Thoughts on hiring sales reps based EQ versus IQ? I have hired more on EQ than IQ with a hint of hunger to make more in comms than IQ. What are your thoughts and what would you normally go for?
