Do you lie

As my wife points out, sales people always are over exaggerating the truth, and I see nothing wrong with that. However we are now listening to other sales reps calls for training and it got me thinking, how much are you OK with lying on a sale?

Can’t say I lie but I also don’t answer any unasked questions.

I don't want to work at an org where I'd be put in a position that I would have too. I think transparency is king and being upfront about something like a limitation can actually give you an opportunity to build credibility.

In the same vain, articulation is also crucial- not manipulating the truth but re-framing something in a positive light can be a helpful tool.

I'll embellish the truth to set a meeting, and be totally candid/honest from there on out

I don’t lie, I ask more questions for clarity or keep my mouth shut when it benefits me to do so.

Transparency always.

The truth may feel awkward in the moment (not be as impactful) but it rewards you in the long run.

You don't want the reputation of being shady.

I have seen people get caught in a lie which then led to an RMA... transparency seems to be key and customers seem to respect it more when you say "No that is a limitation, but we have seen others do XYZ instead"

lie is a blunt word. Talk about the possibilities, even if they aren't straight forward, makes more sense

I can honestly say I never lie on purpose. Of course sometimes I have bad info, and have repeated that (thanks shitty sales managers), but never lie on purpose. Have I cleverly worded things that might help you draw inaccurate conclusions? Possibly.

I paint a picture and say we could probably make that work. But flat out lie, nah man, too hard to remember who and when it happened to and more work to keep up with the lie then get ahead of the solution telling the truth

Would people who always lie, be honest about their lying in a poll?

Honesty is vital, and being a trusted source of information is better than being right or convincing someone to do something that may not be in their interest.

If we can't do something, I say it. If what they're asking is BS or unrealistic I'll tell them. Better to miss a short term KPI or goal and build a long term relationship.

Different companies will have different approaches to this, and I've seen people lie through their teeth and still succeed. But I've found being truthful leads to a clear concise and not losing sleep!

Our top competitor constantly lies and misinforms its customers and prospects. It has cost me deals and I'm over it.

Example: we offer a true saas multi-tenant cloud offering and our competitor is largely single tenant (over 80%-90% of their customers are on single tenant / on-premise legacy solution) and the newer customers are on the "new" mutli-tenant cloud offering. They repeatedly tell their customers its the same cloud - no difference. The challenge they have is there is no clear migration strategy between single tenant and the "new" cloud offering. Zero. And its currently VERY expensive to migrate customers to the new cloud offering.

Thoughts on how to counter these lies? The target personas for our  solution really don't have the technical chops to understand the difference (or even care) until it is too late and they are already under contract and "hooked".

I know it's much easier to lie at the time but in general, honesty works out so much better in the long run
