Do you need to "drink the kool-aid" to be successful?

I've had this conversation with a few people I know in sales and I think it's an interesting question. Do you think that in order to be successful in sales, you need to "drink the kool-aid"?

Sure, all of us are in sales because we have solid negotiation and persuasive skills, but to be truly successful at any company, do you need to be bought in to the product/offering? I believe that the most successful reps at any company are the ones that believe in the product wholeheartedly and that is why they are able to make convincing arguments as to why someone else should buy.

Follow up question here if you disagree, do you think it's a bad idea for sales people to be that invested? Why?

Do you need to drink the kool aid to be successful?

You can put on a face as much as you'd like, if you don't fundamentally believe in what you sell, it's a hell of a lot harder to sell it. And I feel like it comes off that way.

As far as being interested in your industry, I'd say that's also important but slightly less important as believing in your company's product/offering.

believing in your product isn't "drinking Kool-aid" IMO>

I think you need to be passionate about some angle of your work whether its' the product, the customer, or the problems you solve etc.

Drink the kool aid? Maybe. However keep in mind, if you don't believe in the product you're selling, you're a con-artist.

Additionally, To be successful at anything you have to be fully committed to the process. Does that mean you can't question certain decision, or recommend product improvements? Absolutely not.  You do have to be completely focused on selling the product you believe in, the company, ehh, it's not as concrete.
