so culture is super hard to define. but YES it matters. its SUPER important to me but its also super hard to get a read on before you start at a new place.

I have navigated this by asking situational questions.
I would ask the person who is going to be my boss:
"so with PTO what is the process of getting this approved?"

(if they say something like: "I need a two week heads up and it needs to be approved by self and the Director" thats a bad sign. I want them to say something like "as long as you let me know whats going on its fine, just put it on my calendar and we should be good")

Or

"if i needed to leave the office at 4 to make it to my kids game/bus pick up/recital ect, how would that be handled/viewed?"

things like that.

It's matters a lot to me. 1 e.g. in my company, people are super helpful, easy to approach - you write 1 question in slack and you will hear from many. If this changes, it will bog me down a bit. This is just 1 example.

Gonna chime in here. Completely agree, company culture does not matter one bit.

I think of culture as the overall tone and relationships that people in the company have with each other.

If it's really hard to get questions answered vs people being helpful, that's a challenging environment. If people are generally approachable, that's a huge positive.

My company doesn't have cute names for us as employees, we don't have a mascot or theme, but we do have great management, executives who believe in being available, and the overall feeling that people sincerely care for each other. It's easier for me to work when I know that I can have support from management and executives and that it's a culture of "how can we get this done?" rather than "we don't do that".

Yes. I can't thrive in toxic environments, regardless of how much I can block out.

If I don't like who I work with, can't find humor in my day to day, don't feel supported for who I am as a human (being a witty, sarcastic, super direct woman in a male dominated industry), and people don't show a desire to be an active part of creating a diverse and inclusive work force - I'm out. Periodt.

Yes it matters. My industry is all about events and parties and everyone I work with is either old or doesnโ€™t like to go out

It matters a lot to me, but it's something that can be hard to confirm before making the jump. The tough part is that culture changes over time though depending on who sticks around.
Asking multiple people at the company how their work life balance really is, how disagreements are handled, and other quality of life questions should go a long way.

Absolutely. Even if you're WFH, do they value integrity? Do they micromanage you or trust you?

Company culture matters as much as anything. Culture isn't what companies say, it's what they do and how they do things day-in and day-out. How do they make decisions? How do they value opposing views or crazy ideas? How do they treat their employees when times get tough? How do they serve their customers post-sale? How do people in different departments work together? How do they resolve conflict internally? People leave great paying jobs all the time because of a toxic culture.

Absolutely. I hate the whole conversation on โ€œcultureโ€ because it often comes to weird things people like about the office like couches or some shit. I think the #1 is do you all work together towards a common goal. I would rather be completely on my own than work with a team that fucks you over because of their lack of finishing tasks.
