doing work on PTO

When i take time off, I normally turn notifications off, and check email in the morning and at night and make sure i keep a "todo"list going for when I get back.

The MOST annoying thing that JUST happened on my last PTO was when MY legal department keeps pinging me about questions and asking for an update on an MSA we are trying to get through, when I have been trying to get them to respond for a week.

In the grand scheme of things its not that bad but for some reason it just pisses me off and makes me super anxious.

Anyone have any PTO/work horror stories??

Well, ignore that legal team. They had their shot, and you can answer questions when you feel like it and/or when you get back.

My worst experiences are always when I have to head for the airport and RIGHT THEN something bubbles up that needs attention and I'm grabbing things while I'm on the phone trying to get out the door.

But a more specific example is from last year. I had one week where I was to be traveling with my family in Montana. I had a customer who couldn't find the time to have their demo the week before I left, but also couldn't wait until the week after - because if I couldn't find a way to do the demo the week I was on PTO, clearly our company didn't want their business and they'd go elsewhere. So I found a morning that worked, when I could legitimately take the call and give the demo before we left the hotel for our next stop. I found a terrace outside, and set up for the demo. The first thing the group says to me when they get on the line - the project is delayed, as the global team is now looking for an enterprise solution, so their project is going to be wrapped into that one...for the following year. All urgency lost, and the deal will no longer be mine anyway. They at least had the grace to apologize, but honestly.

Happens to me quite often and I have to entertain because if I donโ€™t, my deal goes to someone else. It sucks but that how it is for me.

My previous role, my manager would ping me throughout the day. if I got an inbound she expected me to hope on a call that day. I gave her the feedback, "Since I am OOO I am not always able to work. I can send an email to the client but I am not going to risk running a bad meeting."

She then wouldn't give me an inbound in a territory I am covering since I told her I would be unavailable. She would ping the team slack channel on who can run a meeting right now.

Needless to say I updated the resume immediately after that

Being that it was legal pissing you off, I would go all legal and tally up all the time I spent morning/evening/daytime responding to them, considering responding to them, reading their emails and generally "working" then apply for that as additional PTO in lieu of the time you had to work on your original PTO.

Forward said email from Legal to your manager and ask them to handle it while you are on PTO.

I understand checking email in the morning and evening while on PTO...it makes returning to work much better than sifting through a week's worth of email backlog. Most of it is probably crap anyways and can be immediately deleted. However, I rarely reply to an email while on PTO. Once you do that, the sender knows you're available and willing to work, and there goes your vacation.

haha this is true. replying at my own risk!

And yeah if I wait to get back from PTO before looking at emails ill be so overwhelmed and would not be able to do anything else

Isn't that what a manager is for - to cover for you when you're out?
