Double the Quota, Same Comp Plan

Target letters just came out and my quota is double that of other members on the team, even tho the pay, accelerators, and comp plan are the same. I voiced my concerns with my manager and VP with no results. I’ve never dealt with anything like this before but I guess I’ll be looking for a new job. While I’m sure this is legal I thinks it’s pretty ridiculous to give the weak members on the team a lower quota forcing top performers to work harder for the same compensation. Has anyone ever dealt with this? How did you handle it?

Wow. That's a terrible decision by management... you should start looking and find a place that values your contribution

This makes absolutely no sense, unless you get double the amount of inbound leads or you work SMB while others work Strategic.

Totally ridiculous, it is basically punishing high-performance. Time to dust off those interviewing skills and get the fuck out of there ASAP. You'll find something better.

I’m thinking the same thing. It’s wide open and not territory assigned so everyone has the same opportunity to make money as everyone else. It’s not like I have NYC and someone else has BFE.

It's bullshit. Happened to me too. I left and never regretted it. File an HR compliant before you leave so there's documentation in case they don't make you a nice severance package. And definitely do not sign any non-competes (assuming you already haven't when you first joined) when leaving.

severance for when you leave? I've only ever seen severance for terms or layoffs, not when the employee leaves of own accord.

Time to find a new gig. Sales is too stressful to have that BS hanging over your head.

The same thing happened to me.  New comp plan in January and the quota went way up without any increase in base.  Accelerators were cut as well.

I start at the new place on Monday.

I've never heard of anything like this, this might be the quickest way possible to lose talent and develop an awful reputation as a company which in turn will make it impossible to recruit. Get out of there ASAP

This pretty sad, but happens all to often.  If you are a top performer, you should have the highest target on the team - BUT you should also have the highest compensation to go with that target.  Too many sales leaders hold on too tight to their "OTE's" and don't use common sense.  Also, is your company on a weird fiscal year or something - its April and target letters just came out?

It has a lot to do with putting the facts in front of them.  Asking straight up: "I'm a bit taken back.  From what I'm hearing, my quota has doubled while my base/OTE stays the same, limiting my ability to reach accelerators and continue earning the same or more commission this year.  Can you help me understand the decision behind this?"

You need to sometimes paint a clear picture.  It's also an opportunity to ask for stock options or other non-pay benefits.

This happened to me at my last role. I recommend you put your two weeks in.

80% of revenue is generated by the top 20% of producers. At least that’s how it is in my world. That is pretty ridiculous to set quotas so very differently though while keeping all other things equal.
