Excitement vs. Being Fake / too Sales-y

Hi dream team - I got some advice today that I need to temper my excitement as it can come across as too excited / salesy. My POC was prepping me for a meeting with her boss and she said her boss loathes too sales-y sales people haha. She said it "took me a few encounters to realize you were for real". And advised me to perhaps look at my first impression strategy so as not to 'dampen' my personality, but just tweak that initial meet 'n greet.

So hard to change my authentic, genuine, excited, personality but I certainly want to do that to ensure people have a good first impression.

Any advice on how to tweak, yet not change the foundation of my being? Has anyone struggled, or improved on this and how? ]

Thank you!

My best advice is continue to be you, anything else WILL make you sound salesy. Excitement is contagious, our best SDR is much like yourself! So be excited about the product, find their pains and then you can let them know why you're so excited to talk to them now because of what you sell.

Be you my friend!

I think its important to mirror prospects attitude and behavior to an extent, but im always smiling and joking. I think as long as you really arent trying too hard and being salesy its fine.

I had a similar situation with my manager once. My manager said that I went from being enthusiastic to serious/ blunt too quickly and it made people uncomfortable at times.

My manager recommended (this was only for scheduled calls because my role is significantly different than yours) start the call and just be upfront with it. Address the crap out of it.

I 100% agree with @nosuperhero. I wants was told, and I’ll let you decide if it’s true or not, that for every sale that you lose because you’re too excited or two stoked on your job, there will be 100 that you were in for the exact same reason. Keep it up and keep crushing it.

I don't think they were trying to tell you to change. I took it as them suggesting to be a tad more polished.

If I'm wrong then eff em 😎

In all seriousness, I'm a super blunt person and tried to reel that in when I first started. It didn't work. Authenticity shows through (unless you're a really good con artist type and then do whatever I guess but don't break the law or fuck people over).

I’m naturally not extremely exited. I think it depends on your market if that could be an issue.
