Finance

My firm is actively interviewing for several positions. Would you people even be interested in a very different world of sales - financial services? I suspect not, especially because we definitely do not do remote work. We're a highly regulated industry, but the trade-off is very high levels of compensation.

I've interviewed a LOT of qualified and talented individuals over the last two weeks, but only one person came from a non-finance background already. That person is in medical device sales and has easily transferrable skills, and I will provide the training and pay for study materials and licenses, so I'm excited for them to join us.

This is just me poking around. I haven't looked at WR Jobs at all, and at least in here, my company is very different than where most of you are and what most of you do. If you don't mind, please indulge me in your vote in the poll. Thanks savages.

Would you honestly consider making a move to financial services (sales, not research)?

Nah. Not into B2C or face to face sales.

I get it. People want to solve different problems. I haven't done a face to face meeting in four years though - we were way ahead of Covid.

That’s cool. In my area all the advisors seem to be heavy on the face to face and in person networking.

Almost none of our clients are even in the same time zone as me, so that would represent a serious challenge for our business model for sure.

The 3rd option is highly relevant to me - I would come into that prospective situation with a mountain of questions.  It feels less like just selling a different product and more like jumping into a whole other world.

Sure many of the sales and people skills would be applicable but I have a feeling that the entire process is like to me changing from english as a primary language to mandarin instead of, for example, english to spanish. Though its an change either way, one at least uses nearly the same alphabet.

As you are looking at new candidates I can only imagine that education about the role and industry may be more important than in other hiring roles.

It is the latter, tbh. The intangibles a keen savage already possesses would be the advantage from the word go, though.

Every financial salesperson I've encountered (wealth management, insurance, etc.) has been sleazy AF. Not for me.

Are you saying if you were in finance you would also be sleazy? I understand that's certainly the perception for many, as the bottom of the barrel is quite densely populated. We're Top20 in the country, FWIW. Some people on here may actually be clients of ours, but I'll never tell.

No I just got a bad vibe. All tried to push shoddy funds with high fees or life insurance as investment. When I pushed back they got very defensive and confrontational.

Moreover, I prefer B2B vs B2C. I don't want to have to hit up all my college buddies to try to sell them stuff.

I hear ya. B2C definitely isn't for everyone. Hopefully you encounter somebody who is not as you described though. Why would you have to hit up college buddies?

Some insurance firms tried to court me early in my career. They said you start by calling on your family and friends, which was a big turn off for me.

Not trying to overgeneralize or disparage a whole profession. I know there are good and bad people in every walk of life. Just my 2 cents!

Ah okay I see now. Our structure is entirely different - our clients are mostly the engineers at companies many of the people here in the WR work for. Some are those companies founders. In the “old” model there are tons of guys pushing the sale because they’re desperate. Reminds me of the people Corp parodies in his hilarious videos! A vast majority of those people fail out of the business - and for very good reason.

After seeing so many comments about people in non-SaaS struggling to get into SaaS, you couldn’t pay me enough to take a non-SaaS sales role

Not sure how to approach this comment.

So you are saying that because of comments from non-financial services people in the WR who are trying to get into a SaaS role that you wouldn’t let me pay you more than you make in SaaS? 🤔

Personally, I like b2b/saas too much. I sold into federal accounts for a few years, never again. Commercial/enterprise is where its at. I *almost* took a job selling solar B2C when I was trying to get out of that federal roll, just couldn't quite convince myself I wanted to be in b2c. I have a friend that runs a real estate brokerage who was begging me to get my license and come be an agent. Just can't do it. Between the base salary, benefits, no evenings or weekends (most of the time), and OTE, it would take a lot to get me to change

with that said, financial services have always been of interest to me. The only time you ever see job ads for it though is always mlm.

Definitely interested in speaking if you're still recruiting? I've been in the life insurance space for 3 years and the retirement income planning space (fixed indexed annuities only) for about a year.
