First interview in many a moon

Hey sales pals- Got my first interview tomorrow with a top pick company in the industry I work in (PropTech). I'm super excited, the comp sounds about right from a friend of mine who is in sales at this company. Here's the kickers-

  • If the interview progresses to future meetings I know they will be in touch with my current employer
  • I'm astronomically behind my annual goal (let's just say I'm in the red, ain't happenin)
  • My manager has shared with me in the last few months that they did set the bar for me as the first AE hire WAY too high

Disclaimer: I'm the top performing rep at the company.........still in the danger zone

I would love some opinions on how to approach this. Do I just focus on the positives on what I've accomplished? I'm legitimately concerned if they ONLY speak with my current employer they might make me out to be a mediocre rep or maybe worse than that.

Anyone been in this boat in deep waters?

You’re the top performing rep, and your sales manager knows the quota wasn’t accurately set. Pretty much the truth. Talk about what you did accomplish and that you look forward to knocking it out of the park through your efforts. Avoid disparaging your current company, though alluding to your desire to exceed quota is fine. Good luck!

Exactly. You just need to speak confidently, and focus on your accomplishments against the rest of the team. Don't falter, or stutter. Be real but positive.

If the future company contacts the present company through official channels you’re not at risk. HR wouldn’t expose the company to the kind of liability that disparaging you would create.

If they get in contact through back channels, there’s no telling what gets said. In either case, what choice do you have? You want the job? Go get the job. You have no control over the chatter.

Given the circumstances, your current employer should still give you the praises. Possibly try to bring it up to your current manager in a casual way where you’re just asking for a brief performance review.
