First thing to do in your new sales job

Hey! Here is my favorite advice that might help someone just starting their first sales job.

This might be obvious or common knowledge. However, here it is anyway.

Copy the top performer! Like literally. Shadow them. Check their scripts and way of pitching. If you can lay your ego aside and recognize the patterns of your company's top performers, you will get a head start.

Short and sweet. I hope this helps someone:

Peace.

I always make a 10/30/60/90 day plan so I have clear goals and tasks. The key is to always look busy. Even if you can't execute those goals in the timeframe it is a good way to show management you have an attack plan for growing sales should things have a rough start.

I was looking for this answer. Remember that you're not only selling externally but you're also selling yourself internally to your colleagues and leadership.

Exactly, and first impressions matter. If management sees you as a hard charger with a plan then you're already in a good position vs. someone who sits around waiting for direction and later on wants to try and impress so they can move up the chain.

rip a line in the middle of the office then shit on your bosses desk to assert your dominance. Next, always show up to work drunk. That way they just assume its your personality and not that you drink too much at the company happy hours.

But in all seriousness. Latch on to a few top performers, don't just pick one and mirror only that one. That way you can see several different styles to learn what works for you. Typically the way one person sells won't be perfect for the next guy. Shadowing multiple people allows you take bits and pieces from each person to try out.

Thanks for the advice, felix! I also see this is your first post here. Welcome to the War Room!

Here's a quick tip: Just in case you're using your real name, I'd urge you to change it. The War Room is an anonymous community of salespeople and remaining anonymous is key here :)

FYI, you will want to change your name and remove your business name from your "role". this is an anonymous forum afteral.

Wouldn't copying one top performer restrict your own way of selling / thinking / creating a unique experience?

If you do it all the time yes. But I think in the beginning it is a good strategy. If you get more confident over time. I would start to develop my own skills.

Solid advice. Also ask for all the "best of" - what's the best place to find collateral? What's the best collateral? Who's the best customer example? What's the best way to learn the solution? Who are the best company resources for questions?

Always be engaged in what I have come to know as "Money Making Activity." Stuff that moves the needle and fills your pipeline. I have seen a lot of people new to sales get way too granular about researching and forming plans of attack and not making calls, emailing and most importantly sales.

I agree but also think success in sales is also luck. A moderate salesperson that happens to have great accounts can outperform a seasoned professional. If you shadow the top performer they may not be the best person to learn from. I would also look for a sales rep that has been with the company a long time that has a proven track record. These people will often know what it takes to succeed.
