First time getting fired yesterday. Any advice?

We had a new VP come in a couple months ago and he has now fired 18/20 sales reps - me being included as of yesterday. It wasn’t performance related - it was just a “reorg”...How would you all handle that on your resume and in conversations with new potential employers?

I'm sorry to hear that friend.

Be honest about it with recruiters and hiring managers. They see this happen all of the time. Companies reorg, departments get cut. It's just business.  You are going to be employed again in no time 😎

I appreciate it! I know I will and it’s ultimately a good thing getting out of there. Just never experienced this before in 15 years of constant employment.

I understand-it's quite a shock to your system. It's also a rite of passage in our profession 🥳

So sorry it happen to you. You r right, the timing is great, the market is booming
One tip, if I may, try not to sound too bitter on your interviews, it's a turn off for them. Give facts, talk about the future.

Sorry, one more tip, take a bit time off in between, to decompress and gain perspective. You got it!!!

First off, some of the best things that have ever happened to me in my career were being fired.  Either by a less on I learned, or an opportunity that I found.   A couple of thoughts -  Do you have a good case for a wrongful termination suit - if you were a consistent performer, "a reorg" isn't justification for your termination (even in "at will" situations.  Talk to an HR lawyer about maybe ruffling some feathers.   Secondly, be open and honest about it, have a recap of your performance numbers in your back pocket - but given such a high volume of sellers in your previous company will have job pivots at the same time as you it should be apparent to any hiring manager.

Funny that you say that. My first termination letter said it was due to “not meeting job requirements” then an hour later they sent me a revised one saying termination was due to “sales reorganization”. You’re right though - honesty and transparency is what it’s all
about.

Same thing happened to me last February, and bam rona hit and everybody was getting laid off. It was a weird time. I told people what happened and was able to land a spot in 2 months during a pandemic. Today, the market is hot, we have people quitting left and right and grabbing new jobs. You are going to land in a great new role and look back at this as a blessing. So I'll be the first to say congrats, I know it doesn't feel like that right now, but if this VP was brought in to do this you don't want to be there. Let me know if I can help.

Be straightforward about it. Also use the war room to create a thread reaching out to recruiters for advice on dealing with this.

This happened to me, I was straight up in my interviews. I think it's actually way more common than you may think. Don't talk negative about the previous company and network as much as possible.

I appreciate it!! At the end of the day, it’s just business and not personal or performance related. Everyone got let go.

Dust it off. You shouldn’t worry about trying to defend yourself in an interview process, if the guy literally liquidated the whole team. Get back on the horse.

Are we working in the same company? Had (and still having) a similar experience, where a new VP is letting go of a lot of reps, even though they are good cultural fits, people are hitting their targets.

Agree with the rest here. Be honest with people you talk to regarding new positions. A high chance they've encountered an "illogical" boss in the past or they might even be aware of your companies situation, as good head hunters often know inside information of what's happening in other companies. Even if not the case, honesty is often valued and they will look at your profile, rather than focus too much on past experiences.

Great feedback! Even though unemployment isn’t ideal, it feels great not working for an illogical boss and highly unstable company.

Never lose hope. Sad for this though for you. Surely something better awaits, sooner. Transparency with recruiters will surely help
Meanwhile, try to network with hiring managers

That's shit man. I guess, when it comes to interviews just say what happened upfront. It would be different if it was only you but the fact 18 of 20 people got fired shows it wasn't due to your work etc. Future employers will understand that.
