Getting Denied after references

Morning all.

Curious if any of you beasts have ever gotten to a reference check and then not gotten the job?

I had an odd experience today.  I had 3 interviews with an org which included a final round with the CEO before being asked for references.

They never reached out to them  (was about 4 days between last interview and the rejection) and then I got the email this morning saying they are going in a different direction.

Odd stuff considering they seemed very excited.  

I asked for feedback on what changed but guessing they won't reply either way.

That sucks, I know my references wouldn’t do that. I talked to them ahead of time before providing their information and confirmed with them they never got an email or call from anyone.

That's a really shitty thing to do. You most likely talked to these references so they would expect a call. Doesn't make your life easier in the future.

Can't account for the "direction change." That's unfortunately common. I would, however, be damn sure your references aren't dogging you.

I’ve been in contact with my references and have good relationships with both of them. They never got reached out to.

I might just connect with references and invite them for a coffee etc to catch up or something similar. They also might have pulled out for different reasons like financial etc

How about in process of being hired, then, former friend of a coworker throws you under the bus (?)* My former rep, whose brining me in gets sat down by personnel and almost fired for inquiring where we were at in the process. (?)* He and I still have no clue the why, or what was said. Moved on to greener pastures and better experiences!

That said, I always pad the references - close friends who owe me, etc.
