Getting dragged around (AE Promotion)

Close to being in the SDR position for a little over a year now at this firm.

Originally started training for different parts of the AE role in Jan. I've been trained on all segments of the typical AE deal cycle including mutual evaluation plans, procurement, security, NDAs, and pricing. I've also run multiple first calls or discovery calls leading to prospects taking the next steps. I've also done sales training in my free time (course/bootcamp).

Have been told since the start of the summer that I am on track and should be promoted in the coming weeks or months (I have been leading performance or second in performance and SQOs throughout these quarters). Leaders' only concern at that time was my participation during sales-wide meetings and that I should be offering advice more.

Recently received feedback regarding quarterly performance saying that I need to be more assertive about my career aspirations and skillset. Citing the participation, lack of mentorship to others (I've mentored SDRs), and a lack of agenda or challenges to work on for 1:1 meetings.

However, I have been coming to 1:1s with common topics to hit on and I have mentored SDRs. My participation in team meetings is lacking but when most meetings are AE-focused, I don't have much to offer.

Now has been mentioned recently that this needs to be worked on for the coming months to ensure an AE position. Says that I am ready to make it happen!

This is extremely frustrating to me. I've asked AEs for advice and have been told to lead the 1:1 meetings more as if it were a discovery or sales call. I've also talked about holding training sessions. In my spare time, I have been volunteering for tutoring to help build leadership skills too.

What am I doing wrong?

Sometimes (many times?!) to move up you need to move out.

Sounds to me like they are just milking you til you burn out. They see you as an SDR, not an AE. Time to sharpen the resume.

Cold hard truth right here, but truth nonetheless.

That's exactly how I got my AE gig as well. There was no way I could have gotten the title by staying in the same firm.

Then, during interviews, you would leverage/mention the training that you've received in the prior role? How did you get yourself to stick out from people who have had the AE role already?

I'm not sure you're doing anything wrong. My question is if they actually have open AE positions to offer and are just stiff-arming you until they have a role to fill - or if they are promoting around you and/or from external candidates. The answer to that question should tell you if it's a stalling tactic on their end, or something else.

Got it. The firm is smaller, so our only current opening is for a Strategic closing role. Financially, the firm has been in the red, which most likely doesn't help either. Thank you for the feedback/advice

Yeah, this doesn't sound personal at all, but more like an availability issue. Stay interested and continue your good work. And - if the firm is in the red, I'd be putting feelers out for other openings.

If you're capable of running a good initial call of any kind, you are qualified to sell. The real salesman (woman) ship happens up front. The rest of the chase is clerical/procedural. If the org isn't giving you the lift it you justly deserve, go find one that will. Good luck!

That is what I was thinking, too. I'd think that getting someone interested enough into a first call and identifying pain/use for them to move to further steps is crucial or one of the hardest parts of the role. Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like they're stringing you along, explore your options and either leverage that for an internal promo or accept an offer.

If they accept you explore your options and take advantage of internal promotions or accept the offer.

Sounds like they want you to jump through specific hoops. Try jumping through those hoops (and I actually hate to say this), but make sure they SEE and HEAR about it. If you mentor others, ask them if they'll mention it to the leadership in exchange for your time. You help them, they help you. If you know for sure the leadership has seen and heard and still isn't pushing on, then see the other advice here (because it really is top notch).
