Golden age of tech jobs over?

This article seems is a bit bonkers in how it treats Marc Benioff.
I don't agree with this article but want to see what the crowd thinks. To me it's a signal that sales people have to deliver value and not just talk about their VC investments and how they "change the game". Now you have to show it.
What's the crowd think? Is the golden age over?

hahahahahahaha
Considering that the initial wave of cushy jobs vanished in the dotcom bust...and came back with a vengeance...

I had one of them originals. It blew up hard. Then.... yeah

Yeah, been on this ride a few times myself.
Those cushy perks - not all that important, tbh.

We are basically having the same reaction to this. Feels like in 08-09 when cushy office jobs were gone forever and no one’s 401k would ever recover.

Yep, so 2001-2002, 2008-2009, now 2022-2023. It's almost like there's a pattern here.

Just read the article, maybe over-hiring wasn’t the best strategy for salesforce back in the day but we’ll see how things rebound

Salesforce is far from alone in overhiring. It infested many of the big tech companies - they were all about ensuring no stone went unturned, and that meant having a large, and largely starving, sales department. I hope that mentality is evaporating. It will mean fewer sales jobs, but it will also mean that the jobs left will be better.

Totally agree, has affected even private companies too within SaaS. Think companies got greedy once they saw massive profits roll in and overhired to maximize that. Once the well dried up not only did they have to let a lot of people go but in turn recalibrate the long term revenue goal and strategy

My small company nearly did this - in Q2 we were riding high and one of the owners told me our sales floor cubicles would be full by fall. They were maybe 20% full then. Then they put all this money into a new marketing team and Q3 was absolute dog shit. Q4 were recovering but only closing about 60% of what we were projected to.

I’m mad we had a bad quarter, but glad they didn’t start packing the floor only to lay everyone off. They only hired 2 people and let 1 go because he wouldn’t stop taking calls for his side business all day.

And let that be a lesson for all those thinking they can hold down two jobs that have the same hours.

It's probably over for me because I don't see myself getting hired ever again. But in general? No. Things go in cycles.

Hang in there! I got let go in the dotcom crash, took a year to find anything at all - and it blew. But that job introduced me to a colleague that got me back into a great company when he moved over and was asked to recommend someone. It can happen!

There’s a one foot ladder that works pretty well! Not on a lot of paywalls unfortunately.
