Great Company, Shitty Manager

Title says it all, but I will give more details.


I joined my current role around 10 months ago. The company is amazing, the people are awesome, and I fucking killed it in the first 6 months. Crushed ramp, Rookie of the Year, all the glory and cash.


The next FY comes around, my manager gets promoted, I get a new manager and a new book. My new manager and I do not get a long at all. He has been micromanaging me, borderline verbally abusive to our team, and is extremely hard to work with. I have tried to be direct and ask for feedback on how to work with him or what I can do to improve, but he never is up front and just goes on about “need more grit, need more hustle, do more.”


So at what point do I look to move companies or teams? I love the company and the people, but at some point I have to look out for myself and mental health.

Can you just move teams at your current company (new vertical/lateral promotion if not an actual promotion)? <br><br>you’re at 10 months, so 12 months in-role you could likely move internally and interviewing externally would likely take a couple months anyway.

This is what I am trying to do at the moment. The company I work for is large and has some rules around transitioning into a new role. Pretty much have to get the blessing of my current manager before anything.

Can you speak with the old manager - get his advice?  Go higher up?  If you can't - may be time to move on.

Most of us have dealt with a shitty manager. It sucks. Keep your head down, document everything, and quietly look for something else.

I agree with @Pachacuti -if you had good enough rapport with the old manager, maybe grab a happy hour and just seek some “mentorship”. Tell him/her that the role isn’t serving you as much as it used to and you are wondering what options there are within the org and you value their opinion on what track(s) they think you should entertain, if any.

I would say try to move teams. 

I would go to other managers or go above your manager to their boss and try and talk about it with them. 

if it doesnt work, leave. 

its not only bad for your mental health but it will effect your career progression at the company for sure.

I’m kind of in the same boat. Great company, a fantastic product that customers love, overall very bright and helpful coworkers, attainable quota. But my direct manager is an ass. My strategy, for now, I don't think about it. As long as I hit my number, make my comish, and shut down my laptop to enjoy life can’t give a single f about being friends with my manager. However, if he was getting in between me and my paycheck, I would consider leaving.
