What do you look for in a great manager?

Hi there,


Lately I have been putting a lot of thought in this question: "What do you look for in a great manager?"

Throughout the different (sales) roles in my current organisation, I have had a wide variety of manager types, however, no one really stood out in the way that I could think "Wow, this person taught me so much and left such an impact!"

However of course I liked some of them very much, mostly in the sense that they would be laid-back, thrusting, nice people that were able to shield me from the stress that was going on in higher management levels.


What do you value the most in your current manager, or what do you feel is missing? Is it about providing a safe and stress-free environment in which you can work well, or is it more about having someone around you that can actually teach you a bunch of stuff about selling?

I look for 3 things:

1. Has 0 Issues in working with you - On The Ground!
2. Has their money where their mouth is
3. Has your back, where / when you deserve

what's your opinion on transferrable knowledge? can a good manager be someone that is not particularly teaching you how to close more deals, but that is able to get the right people together to do so?

one of the best managers ive had, did both. 

He would help me understand the different scenarios we would find our selves in and what solid next steps would look like. 

but then also suggest the best people to help get stuff to happen. (this was normally helpful for navigating the internal processes to get stuff done)

Seems like for you it's more about a manager that can provide a good environment, than one that can help you excel in your job (by helping close more) --> or does the first one lead to the second one anyways, if done correctly?

A "good environment" absolutely helps you succeed. Would you rather have a manager tell you you're doing a great job to your face and thinking a different way behind your back?

No but if I join as a somehow new AE, I think I'd like someone who is actually able to help me close on top of providing a good environment.

That is how they help you close. You need communication to close.

Also not overly metrics driven and not a micro manager.

does that then mean that a young manager that does not have "a lot" of real world experience would not qualify? or what does real world experience mean to you?

Not necessarily.. they just have to have DONE the job itself, been in the trenches. (not the specific job, but the same type of role).
