Hard conversations with customer? When your boss doesn’t have balls

people in strategic account mgmt - you might have had situations where you just need to have that hard conversation with customer about how they are getting in the way of their own success.

..... and you have a boss (recently came over) who doesn't know how to say "No" or always been known to give-in what ever a customer asked. Gave me long lecture on how every customer needs to "like" me for me to be successful in my role.

How do you deal with this situation? how do you get your boss to support you when they don't have balls to see bigger picture? (doesn't make it easy to have difficult conversations with herself)

any tips ? past experiences ? please

Yuck I hate this for you. I had a client go off and accuse me of trying to "pull a fast one" on their fine establishment Monday because internal fucked up an invoice. Everything on my end was correct. My boss immediately jumped in after I called her. She has titanium balls.

Thankfully I haven't had to deal with this.

Both my immediate manager and her manager are very strong this way. Your customer shouldn't hate you, but you also do not have to be "liked" - particularly when you may be delivering the hard but necessary news they need to hear. Your manager should also be interested in protecting your company revenue, which means everyone needs to be satisfied with a deal and its terms. Good customer service doesn't mean costing the company necessary $$, nor does it mean caving in to a customer's whims every time, particularly when they are not in their own best interest.

Based on this and your last post, I think you need to start looking for a new job, because this manager is going to cost you money and aggravation.

thankfully i have not experienced this...but sounds terrible.

but i would bring it up with the boss. and ask them why they made the decision they did, and bring up your point of view and see if they ultimately agree and then ask again why they were scared to do things the right way

I used to be so scared of this exact issue. Uncomfortable conversations are tough and I would run from them. Until I said F it and tried it once, what I found is that the customer actually appreciated the honesty which 99/100 times they don't get. To this day doing that has changed my entire sales philosophy and being blunt and truthful works more times than not. Being truthful means they might like you even more...
