Help pls! Best personal growth plan in early VC start-up? Love you savages ๐Ÿซถ

Hey savages,

i loved all your advice yet and we also implemented quite some thoughts of yours in our org.

This time, Iโ€™m mostly interested in better understanding and shaping my career plan.


First some context:

I joined this start-up a the first hire before we raised our Pre-Seed round. 15 months later, weโ€™re 16 people and have great first PMF (awesome NPS & Ellis scores), having 6-digit ARR after 5 months, looking to raise our Seed Round in the next few months.

I work very closely with the Business Co-Founder and we set up quite some processes together from scratch.

Iโ€™m solely responsible for our CRM and Top of Funnel, and closed approx. the smaller 20% of deals alone and push the topics playbook and culture quite strongly. I even fully hired a part-time SDR myself and trained him to book his first demo within his second day (ACV 10-40k ARR).

The founders have a strong trust in my integrity which I highly value and see the drive in me to build up new things. They see that I really want to build a great org.


Why I need your help:

But as the organization is growing ever faster, I want to give a clear preference to the Co-Founders, where I want to develop myself.

Big but: Iโ€™m not sure myself yet.

Iโ€™m still quite young (mid 20ies) and donโ€™t have crazy B2B SaaS experience yet.


I definitely know that I will always want to work in an entrepreneurial role, as I enjoy building stuff.

However, I know that the time will come when itโ€™s better for the org to have senior people coming in and putting our org from Level 1 to 10. Maybe even someone between me and the Founders.

And Iโ€™m self-reflected enough to know that it might be better for the org to have an experienced VP of Sales in there than putting myself there when we grow to a bigger sales team.


Whatโ€™s the best next step?

So here I am. Even though I build up and shape everything today as a โ€œVP of Salesโ€ (lol, donโ€™t care about titles), I want to understand what the best path for me is. Is it pushing for an (ENT) AE role? Should I rather build my mmgt skills (e.g. Team Lead SDRs)? Should I focus on expanding into new markets and building up processes from scratch?

Whatโ€™s the path with the fastest growth in building hugely valuable skills?

Admittedly this was a bit of a ramble and a tough read..
That said. A bit confused on your background. Do you have years of sales experience? Are you in business development? You say responsible for CRM but close deals, mentioned โ€˜vp salesโ€™, and ask if you should be an Ent AE.
As a growing small company you will admittedly have to wear many hats. Small companies are a great way to learn how to do many things and run a business. You need to think about what you want to do and where you see your future going. Do not jump in a management role too fast without closing experience, nobody likes being managed by somebody who has no idea what the hell they are doing.
My advice is be a team player. Fill the gap that your leadership requests you to do. Bust your ass. Be flexible and work long hrs if needed. Try to get some equity in the place.
Get to a place where you know the product inside and out. Become a trusted expert that knows more product detail than others l, and this will be your best move as others will look to you for advice and help.
Just donโ€™t get an inflated title and be the 24 year old VP who canโ€™t carry it and make a lateral move to another company. Seen plenty of people w the fake VP title go to a new spot as an AE or regular role again.

Context to my background:
- have 2 years of general Sales experience, but SaaS only with the current start-up
- as weโ€™re still small, I do all the things mentioned. CRM, Cold Outreach, closing smaller deals, hiring & training etc.

My question at this point would be to ask for your advice: what do you think, is the best path to grow my personal skills and career in this fast growth environment? What could my career plan look like for the next 3 years?
My current hypothesis: full cycle Mid Market for now, then ENT AE, then leading expansions into new markets (e.g. US).

Thanks for confirming, that I first should build my IC skills further. I think today, my skills are good enough for SDR Mmgt (and I enjoy managing our two part time SDRs), but I guess it would cut my growth if I focus on this part and not IC.

Product knowledge and flexibility: check. This is also highly appreciated by the Founders.

If the company goes beyond seed there will be a VP between you and the founders. Not a bad thing at all but should just give you motivation to crush it as an IC. Donโ€™t worry about management stuff yet, your pre-seed about to be seed. Thatโ€™s extraordinarily early. Just think about how to not die. And do everything possible to support that goal.

As 25 I was overly ambitious. I wanted a promotion, I worked really hard, I've closed big deals, I got promoted. Then pandemic hit and I don't know after I sort of calmed down a bit. Became less cocky. Personal life outside work is way more interesting now. I think if you keep working hard and keep learning for a few years it'll crystalize in your head where you want to be and what you want to do and be confident in your abilities.
15 months is not really a lot anywhere. Give it at least 2 more years, you'll grow with the company and keep learning. I think Ent AE is more valuable than any other path you mentioned. Be a team player, build relationships. 15 months is not much with people. 5 years and you'll owe people and they will owe you and people trust you and you trust others
At the same time I would work on your goals, like say by 30 you want to have done this, visited this, achieved this. Consider all areas of your life. Also speak to the founders, learn everything you can. Ask to be in meetings, ask if you can help

Has massive growth ever led to mental breakdown? I have been hustling since 17 years old chasing to strive for success doing odd jobs and unintentionally ended up with Edtech K12 Sales as my first official sales job - A toxic culture with no employee respect eventually me to switch after 18 months. Since reps in Edtech are highly valued, had no option but to continue in Edtech sales. This time it was higher education segment, things looked good in the first few month but slowly it started adapting methodologies like the old Edtech since the management was changed. I decided to move out and switch to B2B SaaS. After 13 months of learning & success, my aspirations werenโ€™t matching with the growth vision shared by my manager and ended up being desperate to switch. Got to a AM-Inside Sales role with a 50% hike. Guess what? It led to my mental break down since the culture is pathetic. In entire journey, all challenges never affected my performance but l am losing the spark to glow and hustle eventually. While I plan to switch, a token of guilt is still alive. The experiences have made me far better and strong as a BDR but blank about the next steps in my career. Thanks for reading. Do share your thoughts.
