How do I tell my boss to stop hiring people?

I work in an industry that has really been hit hard by the recession. We've gone from growing very quickly, to flat or shrinking. My boss thinks that this is a temporary bump, and I hope she's right. She is convinced that things are going to blow up and get crazy again any day now, and she is hiring salespeople for the explosion. The problem is, most of the team is starving. The top producers are all working on some large projects, but the quick-turn day to day stuff that makes for a consistent commission run rate has gone dry. Realistically, we could service the work with half the sales team that we have today. I don't want to see layoffs, but can we stop adding more people already? Is there a good way to bring this up with the boss?

I would just bring it up to them and address your concerns and what you have found amongst the team. Help her take a hard look at morale and productivity. This may cause the better employees to leave and then she is stuck with poop and have to work 5x as hard to restaff.

depends on your role and relationship.

if you feel like you can have a conversation with her about this then i would do the following.

1. get data on the number of opps created for 1 year prior to the recession. get that down to the number of opps per rep
2. get the CURRENT data on number of opps and per rep.
3. do the same thing on closed won deals.

the point you want to make *with DATA to back it up* is that everyone on the team has more capacity and adding more team members would only make sense if everyone is at capacity, which you arnt.

sounds like she's setting herself up for either layoffs or a mass exodus of angry top producers. Either way, unless by some slim chance she's right, its not going to work out

Been there…

You need to be straight forward and explain the items you write about above.

A similar situation came up few months back in my team too. We depend primarily on inbound, so it was kind of difficult to match up the increasing team size and reducing lead influx.

It started with us whinging and whining about it - the manager said we should toughen up and hunt for our leads now. Even when we started doing that, he didn't stop hiring.

So one day, we all decided to gang up and bring this issue directly to him. Commissions were being impacted, we weren't having inbound calls for days on end. It was becoming worrisome.

We talked, expressed our concern with respect. He understood. They froze hiring for a while - till they have the leads situation settled.

Honestly unless your boss is the CRO or COO odds are this was directed by the board. It's a solid move iffffff timetables are accurate for explosive growth.

Unfortunately if/when time tables lag, then the dream they sold the new people wears off and attrition happens. If they're lucky it's the new people....if not then the top performers will go be top performers somewhere where they'll be supported.
