How long does it take you to capture commission?

Prior to my current role, comp has always come about 60 days after the sale. However, in my current role the average is 6-9 months (on one  deal I waited a full year!) and there is no transparency on when deals will pay, and sometimes I can't even get an understanding of how much they'll pay. I can ball-park it, but never really get exact figures until the commission statement hits the day before payday.

It's extremely demotivating to wait such a long period before getting paid on deals. For instance: I closed an enterprise deal in March, and just got paid Friday. But from what I could tell, part of the comp was missing so I had to file an inquiry.

I've only ever been in tech sales, so- please tell me that this isn't common in other industries as I look to leave?!

I get paid the pay period after the client pays their first invoice...in my industry that's usually in 60-90 days from the date of sale. I wish it was shorter because I'm an impatient mf.

I'm accustomed to 60-90days, it's just long enough that when it hits you feel like "FINALLY- now lets get some more!"

This whole 6-9 MONTHS thing is fucking brutal, and it's hard to stay committed to the grind when you're not seeing those dollars for so long.

lol WHAT? No transparency and up to 6-9 months after the deal closes? Do you work for the Mafia?

We pay 30 days after we recognize the prior 4 months revenue. Its a bit confusing because we operate on a recognized revenue model but its basically 30 days after said revenue is recognized.

Never have I seen some undefined plan like you explain where it may take up to 9 months.

For the last decade I've got paid the month after the deal closes (i.e. signature)

Isn't there a formal comp plan? Everything should be written down somewhere.

There is not. I work for a very, very small company. No formal comp plan, no employee handbook, no HR department, etc.
Of course, I was under a different impression when I accepted the role- but alas. You live and you learn.

Working on it, however the delay in pay along with a couple of other enterprise deals have me hanging on until I capture at least some of that commission. Since there's no formal comp plan or handbook, if I leave willingly before being paid I'm worried that I lose my ability to fight for my earned commission.

I hear you, but devil's advocate: since there's no formal comp plan what makes you certain you'll ever see meaningful commission when those deals close?

Oh, the deals have closed and I've been made aware that I will be comp'd on them. I should confer with an employment attorney I suppose- but my assumption was that if I left of my own accord, I'd forfeit those earned dollars and relinquish any claim to that commission I might have had.

On the other hand, I'm not approaching leadership to inquire because right now I feel as if I'm operating off of a verbal contract that I will be paid those dollars- and I don't want to give the company the chance to change that. We're not talking low dollars here... I'm sitting near $40k in earned but unpaid commissions.

The "poorly defined pip" you mentioned in another thread makes me extremely nervous. Start getting shit in writing ASAP. My Spidey sense tells me they're trying to get rid of you and keep the $$$.

We pay reps 45-days after the earning period closes. This month, we will pay reps for September deals on the 15th.

That's so much better... I'm languishing over here drooling over money I've earned but won't see for months, at minimum- and tbh I'm worried I'll never see. I'm on a poorly/loosely defined PIP and am 99% sure I'll be fired at EOY, and am only holding on in the hopes that I can get my money.

Commissions are paid the first pay period of each month and consist of everything closed the previous month. Closed for me means we received payment. So if we receive payment October 31st those commissions will be paid out November 15th

That is an absurdly long time. I thought ours took awhile. When we close a deal, we get paid on spiffs the next month. For the actual deal, we get paid quarterly on the clients revenue as it comes in (i’m in payments/fintech space) post launch.

Staffing sales had the longest delay because you’d get someone hired say beginning of August, but they don’t start until end of month and they wouldn’t work a full month until Sept…you’re paid on hours worked, which wouldn’t be paid out until October (so 3 month delay). Perm hires were the worst because it didn’t get paid until customer paid. I waited over a year a handful of times.
Now I close a deal in one month and get paid out end of month the next 75% and then the other 25% at delivery handover (but we have the first 5 days of the month so some extended opportunity to get 100% pay out that month). This is for saas sales.

We get it all out quarterly, and the pay cycle right after. So if the quarter ended on a non-pay week, we would get it all the following week.

Ouch, this sounds rough.   I'm waiting longer than I did with my previous employer, as I'm now paid the month after first customer invoice is paid, but I can track my sales and commission online (we use Xcatly) and at least have a rough idea of how much $$ I have out there and when it's released.

I get paid net-30 after the previous quarter ends provided my client has paid. If they haven't paid I get it once they pay on the last day of the month in which they pay. Can be brutal but I've never not gotten my commission.

We usually will pay commission 30 days after the first invoice is completed. But depending on the payment terms of the contract (ex. quarterly vs annually), that'll determine if the commission is paid out all at once or spread out over time.

I get paid the month after the product ships. We have a rolling forecast so I can somewhat estimate, but production or material delays impact it more than I like and cause stuff to roll to the next month.

I've had projects closed and waiting for over a year for material or production availability. Not fun.

My old place was paid the quarter AFTER the company got paid, that was horrible.
