How much is right to leave a cushy role?

curious what the OTE and equity % jump needs to be to leave an easy job with great benefits for something new & thus risky?

This is such a vague question lol.

You have to understand things like:
- monthly expenses
- how likely it is to hit OTE
- is the OTE weighted to end of year (as it often is) and if yes, is it enough to motivate a move

Secondly, you have to understand, what motivations are driving the person being offered:
- career progressions or better product? Then probably less
- money? Probably more
- do they even care about equity considering no one is ever paid out on acquisitions

What’s their current situation? Why would they leave an “easy job with great benefits?”

When you know this then you can answer your question

Though...vague questions really deserve equally vague (or no) answers.

Okay, fair you’re all righr, I am not trying to be coy or vague.

I recently learned I am underpaid for the same job as peers. $60-80k less. I’ve taken on more responsibility, I’ve over performed consistently and have been at the company longer (which is my demise I guess)
Because of my tenure and experience- the job is easy. And until new fiscal- I love my boss.
But, that’s all going to shift so my boss, team that I built, and product I sell will be different and I am not likely to get a $50k increase- because who ever does?

So- with these factors- I’m trying to decide do I leave and if so- do I ask new companies for OTE Matching my peers currently or more? What would majority do?

I’m breadwinner for a family- as I’m sure many of you are- so while boss and balance absolutely matter. I’m not in sales for the fun. I’m in it for the coin. $$

This is the Context you should’ve added before

In all honesty, there’s so much nuance.

When you joined it may have been a good wage, when they were hired it may have been at the peak of tech salaries (right or wrong)

I would suggest reading my previous post and seeing what works for you

You don’t HAVE to match your peers.

Let me ask a question: before you know what your peers were getting paid - were you happy, content and able to afford the things you wanted??

If yes, I would argue, speak to Mgt. And get a slight increase ($20k) as opposed to $50k

Or if you’re super unhappy - Continue working and find something in the meantime. The best time to ask for a 50k increase in base with new employers is when you’re already in a job and not desperate for the money

All of this! And you added great detail.

What to ask for if you decide to move on? What you think you’re worth. I got 33% more just by saying what I wanted.

Best of luck!

Re negotiate your salary. Maybe get an offer from few other companies and use that

This can be a tricky one I tried it once and then they laid me off. Little did I know, almost 30% of my work colleagues would get laid off a month after.

Personally, with this harsh job market right now for SaaS / tech sellers, I would not leave a cushy job at all. I mean...if you leave and 3 months in something goes haywire at the new place, you could be in the pool of unemployment people, 500 of us applying to the same job.
