How rare is it for people to start at Startups and end up at a Brand Name company in SaaS?

So I realized that it is common for people to start at Salesforce or IBM and then end up at a Startup where they have more equity. However, I was wondering how rare it is for someone to start their career in SaaS sales at Startups but then up at an SAP, Salesforce, or IBM.

I recently got an offer for Salesforce but was appalled at how bad it was. I currently have a 120k base with 240k OTE and SFDC was offering my a 70k base for 140k OTE.

I ask myself if I do want to go to a Fortune 500 type of company, I would have to accept a dramatically low base.

It's unfortunate that for the most part big companies can't touch the comp of a start-up, I have seen people come from start ups to the larger companies however its not common

Yup. People can absolutely make that move, but it can be tough when you get used a certain level of compensation.
I wouldn't want to go SFDC, personally. Especially with the numbers laid out here.

I personally wouldn’t work at SF. Why work at a company which makes my life difficult every day?

The big one's think their brand can make up for a part of the comp. I find it sad tbh

Is the offer you received in different country? I would stick with where you earn more otherwise currently

Worked for a late-stage startup that was acquired by a big tech corp. I think had I come into the acquiring company with my job description, they would have paid me less. I was able to move up within that company, though, ultimately got paid more, and having that company name on my CV definitely hasn’t hurt. The benefits, such as matching 401(k), money for things like gym memberships and the like, are very nice. I’m getting paid quite a bit more at the company I’m currently at, but some of that is because of the credibility I gained from being at the large company for so long.

In your shoes, I’m not sure I’d take the SF offer, though. What role was it for?

Ah, so that’s toward the bottom end of the pay scale there. Room to move up.

What else does SFSC offer? Benefits? Company car? 401k matching? These things matter too and can add up

My understanding is once you're on the startup track, you're pretty much stuck there unless circumstances change, or you take a step back.

Comp at large corp is a mix bag, but with perks (atleast when industry was in good shape) was all worth it.

I did a stint at large corp purely for the experience and the training (so I can say I know it all on how large corp does it) but growth suffers . You can also waste a lot of precious career time in that process. Also, people arround you are mostly cruising so hard to find exciting groups for growth.

I spoke with a recruiter at SFDC recently for an AE role and it was 60k base / 120k OTE. Im at 105k base lol.

Sounds like those getting low offers are for more junior jobs at SFDC (smb or growth or commercial). I know bases go up to $200k+ for strategic and enterprise and key roles are easily into 150's-170's.
That said, I was shocked at how low Google's pay for enterprise was and there wasn't a lot of wiggle room.
