How TF can companies and recruiters do this? Is there anything I can do?

I was in the 5th stage (of 6) in an an interview process with a company that focuses on AP (Accounts Payable) process automation. I had been given a deck and asked to prepare a mock discovery call. This process entailed:

  • Selecting a company with under 500 employees
  • Finding a target ICP
  • Building and sending interviewers a prospecting email
  • Build a deck and talk track to effectively run the discovery call

Outside of that, understanding and asking questions that pertain to this particular "company's" processes as well as gaining a high-level understanding a fairly technical solution this company provides.

All together I put between 15-20 hours of time into this, only to be told 36 hours before the call, that they extended an offer to another candidate.

This was for an April 1st start date and I even clarified with the recruiter that decision wouldn't be made until all candidates completed their respective stages.

I am so taken aback, frustrated, and devastated at this given how much time I spent and didn't use that for finding other jobs.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there anything that can be done about this BS?

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
Last year I had a 2 hour long call with a recruiter who set up lunch with the decision makers (CEO & President) of a local company. I arrive at the lunch looking snazzy, resume and other pertinent docs in hand. In the first 60 seconds they tell me they offered the job to someone else 2 days prior. I felt ready to choke someone.

But we had lunch (I ordered the most expensive thing on th menu - cause why not) and I walked away with a better understanding of them and maybe an opportunity a few years from now.

Take the time and effort and go to their top 3 competitors and provide the prepared material as part of the interview process and that you'd be happy to burn the original org to the ground. USE THE SPITE SELL FIRE AND BURN THE WORLD!!! MWAHAHAHAHA

I'm serious too even if I sound insane - this shit sucks, go make them pay and get paid doing it.

That's fucking criminal. This is why I'm so reticent to put in that kind of effort during the interview process.

No respect here.

Sadly, this too happens.

I don’t know when will recruiters realise that we’re sales people, we give 200% where only 20% is required in hopes. Being hopeful is part of the job description.

At the same time, the “not giving up” attitude will sail you through. Back to the grind until next one.

Best of luck!

Hi! Have you met Tina? The niece of the VP’s former college roommate’s ex-girlfriend.

She isn’t even remotely qualified, but we owed the SOB a favor, and well here it is 🤦‍♂️

Hate this happened to you. The small interactions ive had with recruiters...it's typically been misleading in some capacity. I can't grasp the lack of communication.

Super curious how there are so many recruiters and how they stay in business.

To answer your question, no there is nothing you can do, except name and shame.

This sucks, and I swear the lowest bar for any profession out there, besides maybe real estate agent, is recruiter.

I had one company compensate everyone that got to the role play round that did not get the offer, because they respected the candidates time but still valued that part of their process. That is my expectation for all now and I let them know up front if they tell me it is part of their process.

Yeah, I have had that happen when I was recruited by the VC for the portfolio company. I do know other partners in the fund so I lit her up to that partner while our kids were playing one day. Fun times getting that apology email.

Hate that this happened to you and have unfortunately been in a couple similar situations myself previously.
Amazing how many bad recruiters there are out there that can't be clear on expectations and overall transparency.

1) It’s a company market, not a candidate’s.
2) Learn how to spend less time. Think about the MVP, not the polished version. I learned that the hard way and have since shifted to 1-3 hours of prep
3) Reach out to the sales leader, but only if you have good report and they favored you in some way. Ask to give your pitch/presentation and seek feedback. Sometimes extra seats open up.

Well you didn’t get the offer. Doubt you will want to work there again. Fire off a good ol nasty gram to the people that made you do all this bs and tell them how unprofessional they were pulling this bullshit last minute on you.

That sucks I am sorry. As a hiring manager I really try my best to treat every candidate with the respect I would want someone to give me through the process. I think asking someone to present your orgs deck is bullshit. I don't care how great you are as a salesperson it will not accurately represent your capabilities. I put my people through an extensive training to get them "customer" ready. How the hell could I expect some dude off the streets can give a presentation to me after a few days with my deck. What I do ask is for someone to present to me with a deck, it could be anything they pick. Their topic of choice. Ever since I started doing this I have been getting a very clear representation of someones presenting skills.
